Postponed from 2020!
The planned Big Mac for 2020 had of course to be cancelled due to Covid. If things nationwide go to plan then by this July we will be free of restrictions. We are therefore planning to run the event that we would have run last year. Here's the plan, same as before:
Our last Big Mac was at Windermere in Cumbria, so this year’s gathering is planned for the South of England. We have used the excellent Solent area several times before, but this time we’ve decided on Chichester Harbour as a base.
“Harbour” is a bit of a misnomer, as it’s more of a reverse-delta - a number of separate channels all converging at one mouth into the sea. You can see on the section of Navionics chart shown here that it’s all the water to the East of Hayling Island (you can view all the Navionics charts on our web site, just login and look under Members Area).
This provides a safe area for pottering around, especially if the weather conditions don’t favour sailing out to sea. Except at very low tides, most of the green areas are under water of course, but other than at high springs you need to be a bit careful of shallows if you sail outside the marked channels.
We will be using Chichester Marina on the Eastern arm as our base (it’s the largest marina in the harbour) from where you can venture up the different channels to historic Bosham - birthplace of King Harold - or Thornham, Emsworth, or Northney, or stop off at Itchenor, or beach at West Wittering.
By venturing out to sea, you can visit the unspoilt Langstone Harbour to the West, or Portsmouth Harbour a bit farther on, where there are several more marinas. It’s also an easy sail across to Bembridge or Ryde on the Isle of Wight, and further West to the rest of the Solent.
There’s plenty of scope for land-based activities, either in case of bad weather, or for those that prefer not to spend all their time afloat. Chichester itself is a charming place, a small historic city with a largely pedestrianised center and impressive cathedral. Substantial sections of the old city wall are still intact, which you can walk along. It’s only 3 miles by road, or you can take a 3½ mile walk along the old canal towpath.
If we stop over in Portsmouth Harbour, there’s the Historic Dockyard with HMS Victory, Mary Rose, and lots more, as well as Spinnaker Tower, or if you like shopping, Gunwharf Quays. There’s also plenty of opportunities for country walks, including on the Isle of Wight. So something for everyone!
Chichester is part of the Premier Marinas group, and is very well serviced. It’s accessible at all states of tide via a lock. It is easy to reach by road, being just 3 miles from the A27 South coast trunk road, itself directly linked to the M3 and A3. There is a slipway and trailer parking.
You can find more information about the marina on the web at premiermarinas.com/UK-Marina-locationso/Chichester-Marina/
We plan to make a provisional group booking for 21 - 28 July We have now booked a provisional 12 berths for 28 July - 4 August 2021, we don’t have an exact price, but anticipate around £25/night.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested, in particular we need to form a good idea of how many boats will be attending so we can firm up the booking.
You can post on the forum thread, or email me using treasurer@macgregorowners.org.uk, or phone me on 07970 183631. Use these channels either to confirm your interest or ask any questions.
Let’s hope 2021 will make up for what we missed in 2020!

To all the Big Mac'ers
I hope that you are all enjoying yourselves despite the weather. As you may know I regretfully have recently sold Ashanti and have moved on to a totally different kind of boat.
I was however hoping to join Roly as crew for the Big Mac but getting Lone Star my 1985 LM 30 ready to sail from Plymouth back to Kent has taken longer than planned and yesterday I made the first passage Eastwards from Plymouth to Dartmouth just arriving ahead of the storm!
So I won't be joining your festivities this week but wish you all a great time and fair winds
Kindest regards
John
PS I intend to remain a member of the MOA so hope to meet up at sometime in the future

I have just returned from another excellent Big Mac in and around Chichester. More than ten boats were in attendance at various times during the week and although the weather was a mixed bag a lot of good sailing was had by all with passages from Chichester to Gosport, Gosport to Bembridge and Bembridge to Chichester, as well as days exploring the harbour channels.
The week worked well for the experienced and for those seeking to gain confidence in company - a key aim for all Big Macs. As usual, it was a very social week, old friends were reacquainted and new friends were made.
A big thank you to Rick Jones for sorting the logistics and to Roly Simpson for his daily sail plans.
A fuller report will appear in the next Newsletter and to this end I would urge all attendees who wish to submit words or images that reflect their experience of the Big Mac to send them to me. Don't be shy! You can use the whatsapp group we set up to send images or you can email words (and images) to me at: editor@macgregorowners.org.uk
I also have a dropbox account for images.
Already looking forward to Big Mac 2022 and details will be published very soon.

Arrived home 20:45 after a long day, journey was uneventful but slow as expected. Big thanks to all for organising this event. Especially to all who helped on and off the water. Much cleaning, tidying, and some repairs to do. Big thanks to Jonathan and Miriam for they help today.
Hope to get out on the water again very soon.

There was no power so no trains so caught the bus to Havant and then a train to Waterloo.
Big thanks to Roly for having me as crew and for some brilliant and challenging sailing.
It was a pleasure to meet up with 'old' friends and to meet so many new ones.
I enjoyed our 'pick and mix' meal at Gosport, our BBQ at Bembridge and the staff at Chichester put themselves out to accommodate us late 'walk ins'.
Many thanks to Rick for arranging it all, to Roly for attempting to keep us all in order and to everyone for making it such an enjoyable event.
Good sailing to you all and see you around.

Glad to hear you guys got back safely, and that you enjoyed the week. I had a very restful motor back across a very calm sea, 2.5 hrs from the Bar Beacon to Cowes. Something of a contrast to my trip of a week before! Unfortunately so little wind that sailing would have been pretty pointless.
It was great to see everyone, and see that the Mac spirit is still as strong as ever. Already starting to think about BM 2022!

I got home safe and sound, but only after losing wheel! I was helped by a wonderful group of trailer technicians, and was sitting back on my way. Is anyone going to put together a gallery of all the photos and videos that were taken at the event?

Hi David, sorry to hear about your wheel issues. In answer to your question, I am quite far down the way of putting together an album of photos for the website gallery. If you have any for inclusion please send them to me asap: editor@macgregorowners.org.uk

Another jolly Mac meet, thanks to everyone and to Rick and Roly for all their organising as usual, and Rod and Jill for the glamping, and Chris for the outdoor bunk, and to Rick for putting up with me aboard White Lightning (you should call her Wight Lightning) (I only poured coffee over the cockpit once). I didn't take many photos but have a couple of Shema, Mist, also Logan's Run who kept pirouetting around us on the way to Bembridge. I've forgotten (if I ever knew) how to post them on here.

Hi Liz
It was good to have you aboard! When I book into marinas around here they usually ask how White is spelt 🙂
If you can email your photos to me or Quentin, we can arrange to put them up on the site.
