Re: May - Caledonian Canal

Further to my earlier post we have had a rethink and are now planning a trip on Poppy (26C) from Fort William to Inverness and back. Our plans are to travel to Fort William on 1st May. Launching that night before setting off on the 2nd and spending 5 days travelling to Inverness and back.

The skipper's guide available at http://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/our-canals/caledonian-canal/boating

says: 'Boaters should allow a minimum of two and a half days to transit the canal' . More details to follow.

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

Hi Jason
I've had a look at the calendar and I think we could fit in a trip on the Caledonian canal. I'm not sure yet where we would stop but starting on May 1st would be fine. I'm in Aberdeenshire 11/2 hour drive from Inverness. I have always meant to go and have a look at the new Inverness/Caley marina in the firth. I take it the slip is the one in the canal marina. Keep me posted with your plans.

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

Hi Anneke I'm not sure which slip this is, I just took it from Bill Miller's reply to my forum post under 'Members in Scotland' Will keep you posted

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

The slip that we used was at Caley Marine Boatyard and Marina on the canal. It's quite narrow and had a bit of a hole at one side, but it is manageable. Access might depend on how many and where boats are stacked in their yard so check it out first! The marina has a tractor that can do the job for a small fee if that's easier.

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

Hi Jason
I see you have changed your plans. Where were you proposing to launch at Fort William? We would still like to come and will await further plan details. We will be driving to Seil next week and can have a look at the olace if you need any more information. We will be driving back via Inverness.

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

thanks Anneke I haven't identified a launching slipway yet so any advice would be appreciated. We thought it would be easier to launch and recover at the same site to save bringing car and trailer round separately. We also thought about starting at Dunstaffnage but then thought that could add an extra 2-3 days, getting to Fort William and back? so decided to stick with the Caledonian canal only.

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

Hi Jason
We did not make it to Seil or Fort William so did not get a chance to recce any slips although I have read since that there is a slip at Corpach (see boat launch). We did go to Inverness and Caley marina and as Bill said, the slip is useable albeit a little cramped. There is a large sheet of metal on it and we will probably ask the tractor to launch us. They like to be notified to clear a space as there are a lot of boats moored and parked in the way.
We had arranged to do the canal from Inverness in Rahui sailing together with a friend in a Crabber which is moored in Loch Dochfour. This would have worked in with your orriginal plans nicely and it would have been fun to do it with another macGregor also but starting from Fort William is not an option for us. We will probably also start around 1st May ( to be confirmed with crews) and should keep in touch to maybe meet up on the canal when we cross paths.
Regards
Anneke

Re: May - Caledonian Canal

thanks Aneeke I have found a place to launch at Lochaber yacht club who were very helpful on the phone last week. It sounds like our paths will cross at some stage so lets keep in touch
