Buying a Mac
MacGregor Yachts USA stopped building the 26M (the last in the 26 series) in March 2013. Tattoo Yachts, a new company founded by Roger MacGregor's daughter Laura and her husband Paul Sharp, took the moulds and started producing the Tattoo 26. This is essentially a 26M but with some changes of trim and small updates of standard equipment and fittings. However, this production appears to have stopped, possibly because the moulds are worn out.
Tattoo announced a design for a 22-foot boat, but this doesn't appear to have ever reached production, and the current state of Tattoo Yachts as a company seems uncertain. There has been nothing new posted on their web site since February 2015.
All this means that you can't buy a new MacGregor, nor its successor the Tattoo! There are consequently no longer any MacGregor dealers or importers in the UK either.
However, a large number of Macs were imported and bought by citizens of the UK and Europe over the past 25-30 years, and there is a buoyant second-hand market. The boats are very hardy and even older models can be found in very good condition. We have a For Sale section in our forum where our members can advertise their boats when they are ready to move on (or hang up their oilies!). You can browse this section without needing to login to the site.
You can also find a good selection of Macs available through yacht brokers, as well as web sites such as Apollo Duck, Boats and Outboards, Boatshop24, and several others. There are also usually one or two on eBay!
Macs remain very popular boats, and with no new supply in the foreseeable future it's likely that the boats will hold their value well.Feel free to add a comment if you've found a Mac for sale in an unusual place.
