We are repeating last year's successful Spring social gathering at Lechlade-on-Thames.
This year it will be on Saturday 15th April, and will be primarily a lunch time event. We previously indicated there would be an early evening meal, but it was impossible to arrange a suitable restaurant booking, so we have booked a large table for lunch.
We will also be using the New Inn rather than the Riverside. The latter are not currently taking bookings so we had to switch venue. For those who visited the Riverside last year, the New Inn is just round the corner.
The New Inn restaurant opens for lunch at 12 noon, we plan for the meals to be served about 12:45. You will need to pre-order at least a week beforehand, we will publish the menu in due course. We will also require a deposit of 50% with your order, to be passed on to the restaurant.
Nothing is fixed for after lunch, but there's plenty of scope. A pleasant walk along the river, boating talk at the marina, or just hang around the bar! Or if you're just making a day trip you may want to head off home before it gets too late.
There is a very nice marina at Lechlade, so you may want to think about bringing your boat, and maybe incorporate a few days river cruising, either launching at Lechlade, or further down river and cruising up for the Saturday. If you plan on doing this please make your own arrangements with the marina.
If you want a hotel room for overnight, again please make your own arrangements. Both the Riverside and New Inn have rooms, but I recommend booking as soon as possible. Those are the only hotels in Lechlade (it's a very small place!) but you could also try Swindon or Cirencester, which are each only about 10 miles away.
We hope you will be able to join us. If you can, and/or if you have any questions, please reply here.

Re Lechlade Marina for Easter Social
Further to Rick's thoughts about bringing your own boat, Nicola and I used the marina very successfully last year - along with other boats - and we are thinking of doing the same this year, perhaps, this time, launching downstream of Oxford and wending our way to Lechlade. I made an enquiry and Jules sent me the following reply.
Dear Quentin
Thank you for your email. We would be delighted to see you and your McGregor friends at Lechlade Marina again next year. We would be able to accommodate a few more boats, but space is a little limited so please keep in touch regarding numbers. I have pencilled your dates onto our calendar, awaiting your confirmation.
Based on your proposal to arrive on 14th April for this owners club rally, our cost per boat would be £70.00 inc VAT to launch, moor for two nights, park car & trailer over three days and recover. We don’t keep dedicated visitor moorings, so the overnight moorings are likely to be in the slipway or on the ends of the peninsulas, possibly rafted up alongside other boats, either in your group or in the marina, or on moorings that are vacant where our customers are out cruising. We can allocate you an area within the marina to congregate should you wish to, and there are details of the local pubs etc that may be able to do food for you included in the attachment.
We should be able to accommodate some boats for additional days mooring and/or parking for cars and trailers if some wish to extend the stay by cruising down river. We can price these individually depending on the requirements, but costs are on the attached sheet for reference. It also has lots of other bits and pieces that may be useful, but please do contact us if anything is not covered. Please let me know if you need any additional info on the marina or Lechlade etc.
We look forward to hearing from you again.
Best wishes

Wow that's a lot of information, they have clearly spent time thinking about it since last year our 4 boats must have had an impact! Though I thought it was all very peaceful.
They are a very nice couple running the Marina and it is a very pretty spot surrounded by trees with grass bunds between the berths and importantly a nice shower block. There is a lovely river walk and a lovely access to the pubs and centre of the village.

CALLING ALL MOA MEMBERS ! ..
Submitted by roly.simpson on
CALLING ALL MOA MEMBERS ! ........in the wake of last Saturdays enjoyable on-line AGM event it`s time now to focus our attention on our SPRING SOCIAL ON 15TH APRIL .
We always used to have a sociable day event combining AGM stuff and various presentations of ideas for MOA events plus invitations to join in with cruising plans and also other items of interest / education . Covid stopped us meeting up in person but introduced us to a very efficient way to include a broad range of members in our essential business and future planning . However as you will see in the Minutes of the AGM...( PLEASE READ THEM in the section on AGMs ) the chance to meet and share in person has been sorely missed , both for friendship and to foster interest in more and various adventures .
the SPRING SOCIAL is the antidote to this , a time to relax , share and encourage ! Its up to you what we do but we have arranged for the lunch and for the room to be available for an hour or two afterwards so PLEASE COME AND BRING YOUR IDEAS and QUESTIONS and any other entertaining contributions you might have . A good number of people have already signalled that they will be staying overnight so there will be plenty of chance for chat while in the day-time , weather permitting there is the possibility to explore the Cotswold market town of Lechlade or wander along the river .
There are also interesting sights around if you are making a weekend of it and should you wish to bring your boat it is a great place to set off to explore the Thames . As Quentin has helpfully documented there are good facilities at the marina and even a possibility to arrange downstream collection . Last year , on Aranah , Ros and I we explored the section towards Oxford , having done the lower Thames up from Windsor in 2021. Macgregors are great river boats .
If you just want to come and test out your trailering / launching skills ( and sleep on your boat ! it is a good quiet place and a perfect slipway ) .
SO.....PLEASE COME IF YOU CAN and JOIN IN THE FUN ! ......please INDICATE YOUR INTENTION ON THIS THREAD and then look up the New Inn menu. Please contact Liz Healey our Vice Commodore regarding your menu choices ( see membership list for details or as advised by Liz on this thread ) .
Day visitors to this event are most welcome but if you are wanting to stay overnight then I encourage you to book asap. New Inn may have places but yhey seem to nly show if booking 2 nights . Otherwise the Riverside Inn plus a number of smaller hotels in Lechlade of vicinity.
OVER TO YOU !

Hi All
Yes please, my girlfriend and I would like to come. We would be particularly interested in seeing how others launch/recover their boats. I've been using my 26S for the last 2 summers from a swing mooring in Swanage bay but that has only involved 4 slipway visits so far. We are only a few miles from the slipway so I'm not sure if I'm brave enough yet to trailer my boat so far. We would definitely come for the weekend and possibly make a bit of a longer holiday of it. It will be a good chance to check out the route there and the slipway even if we don't bring the boat this time.

Hi Andy
Thanks, I found your Facebook post but it's not mine. Mine is a 26S and moored a bit further from the pier. It's really convenient for me there as I can see it from the house and I can kayak out to it from the sailing club. She enjoys the summer months there apart from when there's an Easterly wind.

Hi Chris, any idea why my insurance has a problem with staying in Swanage bay, I did ask them but even they didn't know. Their system said no and a few other locations around the country. It's very strange as back in the 80s we always used to boat around there studland and Lulworth.🤔 I'm just wondering if it has become a bit of a problem with theft or vandalism. (Very strange) anyway it's not going to stop us as it's on our list hopefully this June/July.

Submitted by chris.barratt on
Hi Andy, I had the same reaction from many insurers. They would only cover the boat if I was on it or I had to take it home every time. I think it has been red-flagged due to boats getting caught out by Easterly winds. The bay gets very rough and boats end up on the beach or worse.
https://www.swanage.news/yacht-gets-washed-up-on-swanage-beach-watch-video/
I use Stoneways Marine Yacht Insurance who have an office in Poole so they are more understanding. When an Easterly is forecast we all move to Shell Bay.
Let me know if you come to Swanage. I will be moored in the bay June, July and August unless there's an Easterly.

I spoke to Richard Kerswell who said that he is hoping to attend the Lechlade social. He will bring the Janita Shield so that it can be presented to this year's recipient, Rick Jones.
He is planning a circumnavigation of Ireland this summer but when I asked him which way round he was going, he said he'd decide when he got there. That's the spirit.
When I know more about our Thames passage plan to Lechlade, I will put it in the thread. There is a good chance we will be recovering Margarita on the Sunday - an opportunity for folks to look on and laugh.

Hi Chris, last year we did a 7 day trip with 5 sailing days. We took 3 days to go downstream to Oxford and two days to return to Lechlade. Thinking this year we might launch in Reading area and take 5 days up to Lechlade - 70 miles. Jules at techlade Marina will organise has contact number for someone who will drive you back to Reading. Google 'cruising the thames' and lots of websites will come up with info on licensing, slipways, distances, locks etc Nicholson do a very good guide to the Thames navigation - worth investing. I past editions of the Newsletter you will find an account of our trip last year and Roly's trip a year or two before.

I went for a look at some of the slipways the other day as I was working in the area. Scours Lane looks doable but it is a single lane with nowhere to turn around at the slipway. I looked at a couple of other public slipways but they were not suitable for a large boat. Val Wyatt was closed by the time I got there so I didn't check it although it looks good on Google. I watched a chap struggling to get his boat out at Abingdon Marina due to no side/pontoon and there is a height restriction barrier that was open but no indication of when it is closed and a gate. Benson is on a main road so access is easy. The manager (James) at Benson was really helpful and there is trailer/vehicle storage there too so I will probably take out from there.

Chris In the week we did Lechlade to Oxford and back. For a second week we put in at Abingdon marina and hauled out at Racecourse Marina Windsor. The people at Racecourse were great and had no trouble finding us parking space for the week.
Abingdon slip is council owned and launching and parking are free but I don't think you could leave a trailer. Unfortunately although its a public car park it is managed by the adjoining Premier Marina. The manager there doesn't answer the phone or messages, won't have visitors at the marina despite having a visitors mooring and we found him most unpleasant.
The riverthamesguide.net is an excellent app for information.

Hi All
I read somewhere on this site that it is possible to self-certify boat safety for short visits. However, I cannot find any website that explains the circumstances when this is possible or how to do it. Do I need a boat safety certificate for a week going from Lechlade to Benson?
I have no gas appliances, 12v system (2 leisure batteries) charged from solar and 9.8 outboard, the fuel tanks are in the lazarette, 12v microwave, cassette toilet, no shore power, I will reroute the sink to a container, I have fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detector.
"BSS Examination Checking Procedures For Private Boats. This complete document is 167 pages including titles and introductions. It comprises of: 82 pages setting out all the BSS Core Checks, 9 page checklist, 27 pages of Appendices" Am I going to have to read all this?
I would like to get a boat safety certificate but I think finding someone close to Swanage is going to be a challenge and will probably involve either a long expensive journey for the examiner or a long trailer journey.
Also for the Environment Agency River Thames Registration do I need to purchase a visitors registration in advance or can I just do it at the first lock I come to? I'm trying to keep my options open in case I end up not bringing the boat.

Just to add to Quentin's response for most if not all of the canal and river network you can self certify for up to one month in a year. Any fixed gas installation must have been checked by a certified gas installer. The canal network has a specific form. The Thames visitors licence contains the required self certification and no additional form is necessary. You can complete the form on line, or as we did for our second trip just stop at the first lock that issues licences and get one there. Not all lock keepers are set up to issue licences. Take a polly pocket and tape to fasten your licence to the boat.
