Solent Spring Event

Although it is still winter the Spring is approaching and before we know ot May will be here !

This year I am proposing an early May Solent Social Sailing event over the first Bank Holiday weekend....3rd to 6th May , launching this time at Hamble Point Marina which has a nicely angled slipway. If gathering on Friday evening / Saturday morning we can sail locally Sat and Sunday and one of the evenings hold a social dinner open to any member . THIS WOULD BE IN PLACE OF THE SPRING SOCIAL .....there have been calls in the past to combine the Spring Social with a boating event .

My thoughts are that it would be possible over this weekend for new members to learn tips on launching and sailing and could join as crew if without a boat.

On Monday those able to extend the event could go off for a few days cruising around the Solent.

Please could anyone interested in this event post on this thread so I can gauge how to proceed with organising.

Hi Roly,

Hi Roly,

Do you know what state of tide the slipway is useable? Just looking at predicted tides and timing logistics

Thanks

Chris

Sounds good - I'm over that

Sounds good - I'm over that way the weekend before with a local club, and might leave Easy Peasy somewhere nearby, depending on weather. That way I won't need my trailer...

Hi Roly

Great idea!

Yes I'll be up for that assuming I can get my bloomin engine start.

I'm interested in this one, subject to work commitments allowing, and all gremlins sorted!

Hi,

Hi,

I would definitely like to join as a crew member...to learn the ropes!

Hi Roly,

Hi Roly,

I'd love join at least for the social side - if I can help pull a rope or 2 then all the better.

Ok . Great !  , so far that

Ok . Great ! , so far that is 7 boats and 10 people interested but maybe quite a few more interested to come as day visitors or just for an evening. I have checked slipway at Hamble Point is all states of tide ( though a bit slippery at lowest, and they have a holding pontoon to facilitate launching . All the marinas on the Hamble are owned by MDL and they recommend we base ourselves just a bit up river at Port Hamble , which is convenient also for all the facilities of Hamble Village , plus road and rail access for those without boats. I have checked they can accommodate at least 10 boats . Those of us who already have moorings on the Hamble might choose to overnight at our mooring but alternatively fairly cheap moorings are available via the Harbour master at Warsash , a few on the shore pontoon but mainly mid river....not too far for tender / taxi ride .

I havent yet booked restaurant and the itinery is flexible depending on the experience of those that join but the definate plan is to do some sailing from Hamble on Saturday , returning there for an evening meal event . Sunday might be similar or else we venture to another port for the night eg Yarmouth.

For my own planning it would be good to know if any boats were keen to remain longer than the Tuesday 7th May .

I was hoping to join this

I was hoping to join this event, even if only for the Saturday social, but it turns out I have a clash that weekend so can't make it.

I hope everyone who joins has a good time!

Ok guys  , Ive been doing a

Ok guys , Ive been doing a bit of investigating . The restaurant at Hamble Point has a fairly snack type menu so I didnt think it would be good for the Saturday meal , plus the office there were not sure about accomodating our boats so I thought Port Hamble but restaurants that can take a large booking are limited or booked so I have now made a booking for Saturday evening meal at at The Gaff Rigger , which is the restaurant for Mercury Yacht Harbour . It is a nice big room and the food is well rated especially for seafood. It makes sense now to base our event from Mercury since they have a slipway and good parking .

Only thing is the slipway is a little shallow so to launch an X or M you need to get your back wheels wet or use an extension line (needs a strong jockey wheel) . Also best to be within 2 hours of high tide . I only have the Portsmouth tides available which are high at 8.45b pm on Friday and 9.05 am on Saturday . Alternatively launch at Hamble point , park trailer , and drive boat to Mercury from where I can give a lift back to collect your car if you wish .

Roly

I hope to join you all on

I hope to join you all on this one.

I hope to come along for the

I hope to come along for the spring event in my Hunter 31.

my permanent mooring is Mercury so I could give a helping hand.

my only issue is that I am in the middle of moving house with no moving date as yet! Likely to be awfully close to the end of April/beginning of May.

that said, worst case scenario is could still attend the end of dinner.

Hello everyone ,  I am

Hello everyone , I am posting this in order to reconfirm with those who have already shown interest and also invite any others to join in . It is definitely not too late. It's better to book for more and then cancel if necessary.

So, please a brief message from you all to indicate whether you plan to come and what your slipway and trailer storage needs might be. I have checked that Mercury has space but not yet the storage cost. Also any others for the sailing or maybe just the meal ?

This would be a particularly good chance for any members in the South of England to meet others and to have practical help with slipways and sailing.

The itinerary is not yet finalised and is dependent on experience etc.i will likely start a group chat on Signal ( similar to WhatsApp but more private ).

Roly

Hi Roly, still plan to come .

Hi Roly, still plan to come .

things remain as before, I still do not have a house moving date so us likely to be at the end of April (my gut feeling).

I it goes T... up, I would still have two to the meal.

my sails are at the dry cleaners , hopefully it will all fall in place

It is firmly in the diary for

It is firmly in the diary for me. Still unsure which boat I will be on... parts have arrived from Japan for the outboard so depends if time and luck is on my side.....

Always good practice to carry a spare boat....

Hi Roly,

Hi Roly,

Julie and I expect to be on our mooring next month at some point and can confirm we will be attending the meal.

Thanks Andy.

Morning Roly

Morning Roly

I'm sorry to say we aren't able to make it. We have too much on this month and the bee keeping is in full swing. It looks as though you will have a nice group though.

Jonathan

Thanks for organising this,

Thanks for organising this, Roly. My boat has electrical issues and isn't in the water yet, but still hoping to make it. I'll be coming by sea with tender not trailer, so I'd be happy with a mooring if that's possible? Thinking of leaving the boat there for the week depending on weather or moving her to Lymington for the next weekend. Ian

Hi Roly

Hi Roly

Tracey and i wont be joining you on the Solent, however we will be on The Broads.

Hi Roly,

Hi Roly,

Looks like we will be able to join you this time, at least I am planning. We extended our mooring till the end of April in Clarence Marina so plan to move the boat to Mercury and stay there till 3rd of May to join you. Might need a hand to sail from Clarence to Mercury.

Julia (26X Saule)

Ok ,  so I now have 10 boats

Ok , so I now have 10 boats hoping to take part , with I think 16 people but could be additional 5 if some people have crew I dont yet know about. Looks like at least 5 will need marina berths for at least Fri / Sat nights . I shall give these details to Mercury tomorrow. However if there is space it might be that the 3 of us that have river moorings will opt for marina at least but I shall leave that up to Matt and Andy .

It looks like just 2 boats will be launching at slipway ( unless Magic also comes by road ) and I assume they will launch at Mercury Yacht Harbour , Satchell lane , Hamble

SO14 3 TJ . Fee is usually £25.00. I will discuss trailer storage charge with them tomorrow.

Julia , I am happy to come up to Portsmouth by train and sail down with you on the Friday

Mark I am happy for you to crew with me and sleep aboard.

Boats I have so far are ...Maximus , Getaway, Easy Peasy , MacMarie, Fairlight, Just Us, Magic, Chrisily, Saule and Song of Life (or Matts Imexus 27) .

Also we expect Adrian and Trish Cox to join for the meal ( ? any sailing on the Saturday )

For the meal I said 12 to 20 so it would be good to know ASAP REGARDING ANY ADDITIONAL CREW attending the meal or any others wanting to join us just for the Saturday .

What is the plan ?

Friday evening...not organised . Possible shared takeaway or bar snacks at Mercury/ Hamble pub

Saturday ....sailing on Solent ( not racing but to a planned course ) probably Westward in morning and return in afternoon after anchoring somewhere for lunch ..exact details to be agreed , perhaps Newtown Creek or Beaulieu River . If poor weather could be sailing on Southampton Water . Evening meal at Gaff Rigger restaurant Mercury Yacht Harbour. Meet in bar beforehand , probably 6.30

Sunday ....Sail to a port in Western Solent ...probably Yarmouth but could be Lymington or Beaulieu ( Bucklers Hard) ....I need to check availability this week.

Monday ....? take a trip out to the Needles and then return on rising tide . Some boats may prefer to break off at this stage and visit Keyhaven , Christchurch or Poole depending on how much time they have available . Others may need to get back to Hamble by Monday evening ( or earlier , under motor) .

I apologise for some delay in

I apologise for some delay in setting up a group chat for prospective attendees of this event. I was hoping to do it on Signal but its a bit clunky. Meanwhile its now QUITE URGENT for me to get a better idea on numbers for meal at Mercury YH and to gather preorders during this next week.

Also I need find out from people what their interest is in extending through the week. Please either post on this forum or contact me ASAP direct either by email or WhatsApp. My contact details are on the member database. Roly Simpson

Hi Roly,

Hi Roly,

Was down at Mercury over the weekend, chugged past your boat on the dingy but no one at home.

Rose and I are definitely up for the meal,

The mainsail is at the dry cleaners and new sail bag on order so not sure if Chrisily will be ready to sail but me and my son Matt will be around to help out if necessary that weekend .

regards

Hi Roly/All,

Hi Roly/All,

I'm a new member without a boat but happy to help set up and crew - I'm free any time on the Friday and Saturday if anyone needs a hand and has a spare space onboard (I have competent crew and various RYA power Boat 2 and RYA Dinghy Sailing certification and competent at tea and coffee making 🙂)

Larry

That's great to read Larry .

That's great to read Larry . It will be good to meet up. Are you able to join in the meal and the sailing on Saturday ?

Roly

lawrence.gore's picture

I can join the sail on Friday

I can join the sail on Friday and Saturday but have a prior engagement in the evening so unfortunately I'll not be able to join the meal.

I'm still hoping to come -

I'm still hoping to come - plan is to sail from Swanage on Thursday 2nd May, to Hamble if the winds and tides permit. Chris Barratt hopes to be with me, but he can't do the weekend so more crew are welcome over the weekend. Still a few things to do on the boat before it goes in the water though! Ian

Unfortunately Easy Peasy is

Unfortunately Easy Peasy is not going to be available - too many issues to sort out before it goes in the water, but Brigit and I will be over on the Saturday by car as early as possible and we are definitely on for dinner! We're happy to crew as necessary...

You have done a grand job

You have done a grand job here, Roly. I hope you have decent weather and that everyone has a grand time.

I am still having trouble with my cataracts, the first op wasn't too successful so I go again next week. This means I can't drive for a while so I wish you all well.

Simon.
