Richard Kerswell has asked me to help facilitate an idea he has for a MacGregor gathering in June. The plan is for a crossing from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly, and back. Depart Penzance Wednesday 8th June, return Wednesday 15th June.
Richard has made the crossing many times in his M, Pegasus. He knows the best way to plan the passage as well as all the nooks and crannies where a group of boats can safely anchor or moor-up, once there.
He thinks a week will allow time to make the crossing and have a few days exploring. The weather and tides will dictate the precise timings but there should be plenty of time to explore some of the highlights of this wonderful sailing destination. The islands of St Agnes, St Mary's, Bryher and Tresco will be on the itinerary.
It will be adventurous sailing. There is at least 35 miles between Penzance and the Scillies and it is rarely a flat sea. So, probably not the best choice if you are new to your boat and have little sailing experience.
Richard says that Penzance is a great place to launch a Mac and there is plenty of room to leave a car and trailer on the quay.
If you are interested in this trip, just leave a note on the forum or pm me directly. I will pass on all shows of interest, or questions, to Richard and will keep everyone abreast of any firm plans that evolve. I am very interested in doing this myself but cannot yet commit to it.

Hi Quentin,

Hi Quentin,
As you know I don't have my Mac anymore but I am hoping to take the LM down to Falmouth early June and had toyed with the idea of going to the Scilly's but dismissed it as perhaps a step too far without local knowledge.
I would be interested however in sailing Lone Star over with a flotilla of Mac's.
Trusting you are keeping well - I'm just recovering from a dose of Covid at the moment, despite being triple jabbed !! It was just like the Flu but it's left me with a bit of a frog in my throat. Isolation ends at the weekend .
I'm hoping to make it to Lechlade so we can catch up properly then,
Very best Regards,
John

Was planning on doing that

Was planning on doing that trip sometime during the summer of 2022. Not too sure about June as June weather can be a bit temperamental, I would have thought that sometime in July would be better or late August even early September. Just a thought.

Point noted and shared with Richard. We try to spread the events out if we can and we have the Big Mac end of July. Attaching a fixed date to any sailing event always puts one at the mercy of the weather Gods, whenever it is. We'll just have to pray a bit harder in early June. If the Scillies are untenable there may be alternative, more sheltered sailing in the Penzance vicinity.

I will keep a keen eye on

I will keep a keen eye on this, as would love to do it, but my June is already a bit hectic. Even Mrs Song of Life has shown an interest!
it is always a fine balance between kids, work, life, not to mention the weather so I would always be a late call.
I'd like to join and will

This sounds a great idea. Up for it, please count me in. Not sure if boat Dragonfly will be ready for it, but will try, else would be honoured to crew. Also talking to adult Scout colleagues about "robust crew" status, some of them very experienced in a variety of boats.... Thank you for this initiative, Roger
Hello!

Hello!
I am your new fellow MacGregor owner with a Mac 26X (1997), previously known as Chrissy but will be renamed to Rosales.
This trip to the Isles looks amazing but it's too big a task for me and my Mac isn't ready for such a voyage. I hope this becomes a regular event as I'd like to attend next year.
If anyone would like a 36 yr old rookie, a 'boot'!, on board then please get in touch. I've done the RYA Competency Crew course if that helps and I have a tank of petrol in my Mac that won't be used this year!
Look forward to learning from you all. I am already indebted to many of you that have helped me thus far, Aktar.
Unfortunately June is not

Unfortunately June is not going to work for me and July is a bit tight as planning to trail up to Scotland fora few weeks. Would love to do it next year . Sorry to disappoint.

I'm struggling to find time
Submitted by quentin.sands on
I'm struggling to find time for this as well. I will speak with Richard at the social event in Lechlade and relay information. Could still be a great trip for a small expeditionary force in the company of one who knows the score on all things Scilly.

I have just spoken to Richard
Submitted by quentin.sands on
I have just spoken to Richard and explained that the dates do not work for three of us at least. If there is anyone who would still like to join Richard he is happy to run the trip - even if it is just one other boat. Also, he is not tied to the particular dates that have been mentioned in this thread - so there is lots of flexibility. My problem isn't so much the timing of the event, more the loss of family goodwill that comes about from going away and enjoying myself too often. I do hope to do the Scillies trip - sometime. Anyway, if any one wishes to go for it in June - or thereabouts - then please let me know and I will put you in touch with Richard.
