Holland

Suggested by Anneke Wallace

Either the South for a change or back to the Friesian lakes and islands. I am willing to do the organising if there is enough interest and a suitable date can be found.

This is mainly canal cruising as well as sailing on inland lakes. Very laid back! The Dutch canal system is unique and charming.

Please let us know if you would be interested in attending this event, and in particular what dates would suit you as nothing specific has been proposed yet.

Re: Holland

We are now proposing to hold this event on 18th - 26th June.

I'm very interested in going, I went on the Friesland event back in 2010 (that long ago!) and was captivated by the Dutch canals. A return visit is long overdue.

Re: Holland

More details from Anneke (as published in the newsletter):

Boats can launch and retrieve at Workum, NW Friesland. Workum has good access to three different types of cruising
depending on weather conditions at the time:

  • Inland waterways, lakes and villages of Friesland, many free moorings, town quays and marinas. Good sailing on large lakes.[/*]
  • Ijsselmeer, a large inland sea great for exploring the old hanzeatic ports on the Friesian and the North Holland shores. It is shallow and can produce some tricky short waves in bad weather but access back to Workum is always possible on the Friesian side through the canals.[/*]
  • The Waddenzee, with 'Riddle of the Sands' type shoals and islands off the north coast. Workum is near the Sea Locks at Kornwerderzand a good starting point for exploring this world class nature area. It is very tidal and tricky navigation but in the right weather an amazing experience.[/*]

Travel to Workum is possible by ferry to Ijmuiden from Newcastle, Rotterdam from Hull or the cross channel ferry from Harwich, then drive through Holland. For those in the South of England, you can also go from Dover to Calais or Dunkirk then drive through Belgium and onto Holland - this is quicker (and cheaper) than driving all the way to Harwich.

Re: Holland

Are any other members planning to attend this event? Please post here ASAP if you are. I'm intending to book my ferry crossings soon, but I'm not sure I want to be the only one (apart from Anneke)!

Thanks

Re: Holland

Yes ros and I are coming and just about to book ferry also. We can start our holiday wednesday 15th so we can maximise time to explore . If others are not there that early we might do some cycling.
LookING fwd to a repeat of the great time we had last time.

Re: Holland

Bobbie and I hope to do the Holland event but As we weren't at the AGM this year, I was waiting for news of the agreed location, date, etc. (as well as an idea of the programme for the rest of the year so that we can plan dates etc)

Could someone please post some info to help

Thanks
Mike

Re: Holland

Hi Mike

The event was agreed with dates as proposed, meeting on Sat 18 June at Workum. Anneke will join everyone there.

This is some supplementary information she's sent me:

Friesland Rally 2016

1. Launch at Marina I't Soal in Workum. http://www.itsoal.nl

Good slip, trailer parking and access to town.
Good sailing alternatives for all weather conditions.

2. Access to inland waterways with canals small and large lakes allowing a mixture of cruising and good sailing. A variety of mooring places from town and village quays, marinas and more remote rural jetties.

3. Cruising on the non tidal Ijsselmeer, either down the Friesian coast or crossing to the North Holland side with some lovely old ports to explore.

4. Explore the islands along the north coast and the tidal waters of the Waddenzee. From Workum sail on the Ijsselmeer north to lock out to sea at Kornwerderzand and sail north to Harlingen and on to Terschelling or Vlieland.
It is best to work with the tides and from Kornwerderzand it is best to leave at or 1 hour before High water, which on Sunday 19th June is 08:45.
This is just an example as other routes are possible.

5. Charts
a. Inland Waterways ANWB Waterkaart B Friesland or the cheaper ANWB waterkaart Friese meren

b. Waddenzee - Hydrografic chart 1800 series. A very good website about sailing on the wadden is on http://www.wadvaarders.nl This is in dutch but it maybe possible to translate some of the relevant information.

A very good electronic tide program can be downloaded giving much information about crossing shallow areas in English .

Re: Holland

Thanks Rick.

We were probably thinking of 2 weeks - Anyone else doing that?

Re: Holland

Hi All
I have just come back from a prolonged trip to France and Spain in a camper where wifi on the move proved unreliable and have not spoken to Rick yet to find out what went on at the AGM . Pleased to hear some of you are coming back to Friesland. We were also intending to come for 2 weeks and will meet you at Workum on Saturday 18th June.We will again come in a traditional local boat and may have to change crew after the first week.

If anyone else is interested please make contact either on the forum or email or phone me direct.

, Tel 01975581266.

The itinary will depend on wind and weather forecasts nearer the time but if you have any special preferences please let me know. I will put some more information together later.
Anneke

Re: Holland

Just a note on ferries (not including the Dover options):-

Stena seem to be cheapest but the drive down to Harwich is not so good for us

We will probably pay the extra couple of hundred pounds and go from either Hull (P and O) or Newcastle (DFDS)

Mike

Re: Holland

Ferry booked from Hull to Rotterdam

ETA at It Soal lunchtime 18 June - return 2 July

Can't wait - kiberling with a glass of Dutch beer!

Mike

Re: Holland

Well done Mike
I'm still looking for a boat as the 'Stern' was sold and am waiting to hear from my dutch crew. We usually go Newcastle Amsterdam with the car but have not booked yet. If per chance I do take Rahui we will also go Hull. Did P&O do their trailer free deal?
Anneke

Re: Holland

I got a bit of discount quoting 2015csma but it's still nearly £800

I paid that to have my car serviced recently - so what the heck! - it's still a cheap 2 week holiday :D

Mike

Re: Holland

We are booked Harwich to Hook of Holland night sailing on 15th June so will arrive a bit earlier and maybe have a day cycling .
We shall return on 13.45 boat on 25/6/16 ....sorry cant stay longer , leaving the Practice to salaried and locum staff who have a propensity to get sick!
Our cost was £440 total for up to 12m trailer. Cabin on night boat plus cancellation/delay insurance.
The cost on that crossing can be brought down CONSIDERABLY by doing 2 day crossings. I booked direct with Stena on their website which seemed to be same price or cheaper than Direct Ferries.

Heres hoping for great weather .....the great company is taken for granted.

Re: Holland

I've finally booked for Holland - decided to use the tunnel. Got a return for £309 via the Camping & Caravan Club, which didn't seem too bad. Mind you, getting across the Solent and back is another £138!.

Well be leaving on Thursday 16th, arriving Friday afternoon, stopping over Thursday night in a service area. Seeing as I now tow the boat with a camper there's no more trying to make the boat do as a temporary caravan! We'll head back on the Sunday, return tunnel booking is midday on Monday 27th.

I just hope the weather turns out as nice as last time.

Re: Holland

ATIS radios

I'm aware of the rules regarding ATIS on European waterways, and I had my VHF converted before the 2010 event.

However, that was a normal fixed set, but having changed boat I now just use a hand-held. It has ATIS mode, but there's a catch. Dear old OFCOM won't vary a portable licence to include ATIS, the rationale being that the ATIS number denotes a vessel, so the ATIS set should be fixed to the boat.

I'm not planning on buying a new fixed set. I actually have an old, working fixed set that I might install as a backup, but that's not ATIS compatible (not even DSC).

Anneke - do you know of anyone using a hand-held in Holland with ATIS mode? I hardly had need of VHF last time, I'm not sure if I used it at all. However, if we go out of the canals it might be necessary. I guess using a set without ATIS will be quickly spotted by any listening officials, which could be awkward!

I could programme an ATIS number into my hand-held (it's always the MMSI number preceded by 9), but it wouldn't be registered on the central database, so the ATIS number would be unidentifiable to listening authorities - possibly as bad as not using ATIS at all.

I could register a fixed set with OFCOM (which I need to do if I'm to install my old one), say it's DSC even though it isn't, and request an ATIS variation. Then put the ATIS number into my hand-held. My transmissions will be valid, and no-one will know it's a hand-held unless they inspect the boat - even then will they care?

Have I bamboozled everyone?

Anyway, I think I've talked myself into the last option. Anyone got any dire warnings against doing that?

Rick

Sorry I am slow in replying but in middle of lambing etc and my son gets married next week. Will do an email to everyone as soon as I catch up.

I don't know the best answer re vhf. I now also use only a dcs handheld as the fixed vhf packed up. I have it licenced but of course no call sign nor boat name therefore not regisTered to a specific vessel. It is ATIS enabled and has had my MMSI number entered so I would have to enter that with prefix 9 were I to use it in Friesland. as I'm renting again the ' Teerling' will have it's own radio. I remember when I last registered for ATIS in UK it warned that as the UK had not Acceded yet to the Basel arrangementsthey could not guarentee that UK vessels would not have problems. Mobile phone contact is very good almost everywhere so if it was me I think I wouls enter an Atis number into my handheld in case of emergencies.

We are booked on Newcastle ferry 14th June and will pick up Teerling in Woudsend on the Friday and hopefully be in Workum Friday evening or Saturday morning. Sailing for two weeks but need to change crew in the middle. Ferry home 5th July.

Hi Anneke

Hi Anneke

Thanks for your reply, it's good to know you understand the problem!

I've now registered a fixed VHF DSC, even though I don't actually have one, and requested an ATIS variation. I'll put that number into my handheld. I think that's better than creating a number from the handheld MMSI because that won't be registered at all.

We should be in Workum Friday afternoon, look forward to seeing you.

If brexit prevails maybe we

If brexit prevails maybe we will all be able to turn up with a set of semaphore flags.

it's not snowing here in the Gulf of Mexico but they're all driving cars on the wrong side of the road and the boats all come into port with red cans to starboard (they are called "booeeys") - crazy

looking forward to seeing y'all back in lil ol' europe
