Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

I've been nagged into organising the broads event ( Thanks Stephen!! )

The routes / stops are flexibly set in soggy concrete :-)

It's proposed to hold it over august banks holiday 23-26 August

My thoughts are

Starting Friday night /Sat morning at Sutton Staithe (Staithe is Norse for “Landing stage”)

Saturday - a leisurely bimble down the Ant through Barton broad watching the regatta

Drop any masts at Ludham bridge turn left up the Thame overnight on Womack water/Ludham

Sunday - turn right up the Bure to Wroxham for Lunchtime Fish/chips and a visit to “ROY'S” ( a Norfolk Institution), back down to Ranworth for the evening .

Monday Pop down to the flat lands at Acle bridge return via Ludham bridge (Mast drop) watch the regatta at Barton Broad (or maybe Race?) return to Sutton Staithe in the evening.

These will necessarily be short days because the broads will be very busy with other boats and you have to nab your moorings by early afternoon.

Masts - Most of the time we will be motoring but we will only be doing 2 mast drops - Ludham bridge 2.59M 8'6” so you should be able to leave your mast on if you want - I am !

Surprisingly the broads are tidal and the tides will be against us so I don't intend to go under Potter Heigham 6'6” or Wroxham 7'3” (checkout Youtube)

I will be doing a Reece in “Annabel Jane” beforehand to check every thing out.

Friday evening meal has been booked at the Sutton Staithe Hotel

Costs

Slip - £10 each way (group deal may follow)
Parking Free in the pub car park
7 day Short term Broads Toll - £36.20 (I could get these in advance)
Overnight moorings – Free - if we can nab the limited supply if not we may have to do some anchoring/ rafting

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

Sara and I would hope to make it as we enjoyed the harwich muster, but I will have to confirm nearer the time as I travel a lot and cant always be sure?

I'm out of levington/Suffolk yacht harbor, I believe thee are 2 or 3 others in and round there? Be happy to convoy up.

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

Just been looking at the proposed cruise and noted the bridge height at Ludham of 2.60m . Due to the"gallows" on the stern, Avocet has a minimum air draught of 3.0 metres with the mast lowered and so will not be able to pass through. Maybe we could launch somewhere South of Ludham and join up when the rest get there.

Any suggestions for another launch site from those who know the Broads, please? WE could perhaps drive to Sutton by road to loin the Friday evening party.

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

We have been studying the possible cruising areas either side of the bridge under which we cannot pass and sadly have come to the conclusion that they are so limited that it's not really worth all the effort and travelling involved to get there, much as we would have liked and had been looking forward to a Bank Holiday weekend on the North Broads.

With regret therefore, Avocet will not be there.

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

With great sadness I am going to have to cancel the broads meet . :(

I have had many problems sorting out slipways , restaurants , mooring etc. but I thought I had it all sorted now.
My mac is in the water ready.

But I have been drafted in to assist in the inquiry into a serious gliding accident this weekend.
This along with my normal job means I am going to be totally maxed out probably for the next month or more.
my inbox is already creaking under the load.

Sorry

Sorry to hear about the cancellation of the planned event but do understand that folk have "day jobs" as well.

We are just back from Morbihan which went well. Interesting little near fire incident which I will post about separately as it involves a risk people may need to know about on their boats and at home!

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

Very disappointing news! Do any of the interested parties fancy doing something else? Going somewhere else? Making another plan? Even going to the Broads anyway? Another venue on our to-do list (after reading John Anstice-Brown's article) is the Falkirk Wheel, we were wondering whether to give that a go - though we know nothing about it other than what was in the article. Anyone got any other ideas??

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

Hi Liz,
Sorry to be so late in responding - been away for a long weekend.

For the Falkirk Wheel trip we launched at Auchinstarry Marina which is a few miles west on the Forth & Clyde canal. Staff there very helpful and friendly. There are about 4 locks to get to THE WHEEL and BW staff organise convoys so that they can operate the locks in sequence by going ahead in a van along the towpath.

When we went there was plenty of room for overnight mooring if wanted in the basin below the wheel. Again the staff were very helpful and allowed us several trips on the wheel with friends who had come to see us - all at no cost other than the canal licence. We were known as "the wee white yacht".

You can download Skippers Guides for both the Forth & Clyde canal and the Union canal from the Scottish CRT website (or at least we could from the old BW one).

Hope you get there - it's really worth while and only a day to get to Edinburgh.

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

In reply to Tony Wrights post about launching sites around Seaton or South Devon, I have recce'd, [but not launched] at the Lyme Regis harbour slip, which is large and easy to use, but there has to be water in the drying harbour, and there is a good slip at Exmouth [off the playing fields not far from the railway station], again a drying river, and what looks like a reasonable slipway at Teignmouth. Beyond that I'm not sure, but Torquay is bound to have a good slipway, but there is nothing decent at Sidmouth or Seaton sadly.

Re: Norfolk Broads August Bank Holiday/Early September

thanks for reply - which is more than the axe yacht club did at seaton! Its a drying harbour but has a good slipway.

I think we are going to end up in salcombe, good facilties, and places to do in the river should the waves be up etc.

cheers
