- On the water:Association events
At the AGM it was decided that the committee would organise just one event this year, but aim to make it a big one. We would like to see lots of members join in, especially those who haven't attended any of our events in the past.
We have fixed the dates as 25th July to 1st August, and are finalising our thoughts as to the venue. We shortlisted three: the Broads, the Blackwater, and Chichester Harbour. The favourite among those at the meeting was the Blackwater, and we are looking at the logistics to make sure it is viable, and will offer a range of sailing for all preferences.
The dates are Wednesday-to-Wednesday, and we will cater for anyone who only has the weekend free to join us in the middle.

Hello all,
Upon preparing the boat for the road today, I noticed that my starboard spreader has virtually snapped through where it joins the steel assembly at the mast. I'll attempt to get the boatyard to effect a repair tomorrow but some advise please:-
Am I right to assume that the spreader does not carry excessive loading? It seems to me that the standing rigging load is carried at the mast further up than the spreader, and at the chain fitting at deck level?
My thoughts for a repair are to insert a steel rod into the alu spreader and also into the steel assembly, and bolt through. Does that make sense?
If a fix is not possible I'm still coming but regrettably I will be motoring everywhere!
What a drag!
Regards, John

Hi John
The main load on the spreaders is end-on, so inserting a joint rod or tube should be adequate. Your failure is a fatigue break resulting from inevitable flexing over time.
It's important that the top section of shroud is correctly adjusted, the manual specifies the distance between the top end of the shroud and the spreader fitting. Make sure this is exactly correct (both sides) when re-assembling.
Hope you'll be able to sail!

Submitted by roly.simpson on
Hmm. The spreader does potentially take a load on an M which has no back stay so depends on rear sweep of spreaders to keep it in proper position. Especially if sailing.
The spreader is a simple aluminium tube and I replaced mine quickly before an event in past. If you can give me the exact dimensions...external and internal diameter plus approximate length I can buy at metal merchants Monday morning and we can fix it at Bradwell. Internal diameter is important to fit spreader end back in. You can remove the black end by unscrewing fixation screw. Have you got calipers to measure?

Hi, Rod and Jill
Where do you plan to launch and retrieve?
The fleet plans to be in Titchmarsh Marina (weather etc....) exploring the Walton Backwaters so it might be worth heading there direct.
Best to check with Marina Office as to best times to launch and retrieve. They do have a slipway and assume it will cope with a Mac but do check.

Are you coming to the Gala Dinner at Tollesbury on 28th? You will need to select your food choices on the website set up by Rick. ASAP please as Friday was cut off date so I will have to have a wee chat with the chef.
The fleet is planning to sail to Burnham on Crouch Marina on 26th, returning to Bradwell on 27th.
Then the fleet heads for Titchmarsh Marina on Monday 30th, probably returning to Bradwell on 1st. August
Please let us know your plans so we can update Marinas to book berths.

Any pointers most welcome.

Hi Stu
The plan is to be in Bradwell on the night of 29th, and probably using the Green Man pub. The plan for 30th is to sail to Walton Backwaters, staying there at Titchmarsh marina. If you joined a boat it would be a bit difficult to get back to the camper!
Are you just staying one night? If you were to make it a day later you could meet us at Titchmarsh, where we will be for the following night as well.
Of course these plans may change - based on past experience of Mac events, they probably will. Not sure how much that helps ...

Current plan is free sailing and exploration in the Blackwater estuary or up the river and end up back in Bradwell for the night. However consensus might be for some to wild moor or cook aboard since we will have partied the night before. Keep in touch and I will also call / text you..
on 3oth we plan to go to Titchmarsh Marina near Walton on the naze and will likely have a bbq that night.

Passage Planning - The Blackwater to the Crouch and back.
Many of you will be on the road en-route to the delights of the Essex Coast, so wishing you a safe and uneventful journey.
It is recommended that you only use the shortcut through the Ray Channel which runs between Buxey Sands and Dengie Flats on a rising tide above half tide so using the last of the ebb to exit the Blackwater and the flood to sail up the Crouch means you will need to continue further eastwards to the Wallet Spitway buoy, then head about 140 degrees to the Swin Spitway (which you should be able to see) and then head SW following the channel markers up the Crouch.
Wind is forecast to be from the South/South West and sadly not a lot of it.
Plenty of fuel and high SPF sun tan lotion.
Reverse this on your way back to Braadwell.
Good Saling

Thanks to Roly and Simon for the setting up of a great event, notwithstanding having either too little or too much wind. Also thanks to Roly, Quentin, Chris, my bro' Peter and all other Mac folk and some non-Maccers who helped me launch and recover in difficult circumstances. My jockey wheel arrangements are being sorted and I'm researching winches! The sailing area we covered was highly impressive I thought, and the villages and towns around were a delight. The locals too seemed so helpful & polite - drivers, locals in pubs, asking for directions. I'm planning a road trip to show the area off to Annie.

What’s more as many of you will know The jury was out as to whether a Mac was the boat for me and I am pleased to say I am now pretty confident about keeping it and will spend time and dough to make some upgrades to make it better.
Finally, thanks to Roly. Simon & Rick for all there hard work in organising an thanks to the men in my life Peter, Quentin & David who put up with me and without whose help I could not have had such a great time.
Im back in Kent now but ASHANTI is still in Bradwell , I’m planning to sail her back to the Medway at the end of next week - hopefully via the Roach and Havengore bridge

I endorse John's thank you to Roly, Simon and Rick - Dot and I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and meeting so many like minded sailors to share and exchange ideas and experience with.
Also very impressed with all the offers of help to help sort out our broken dagger board and damaged propeller which prevented us taking a more active part in the meeting.
I am now casting a new dagger board mould from our damaged one. We are documenting the process and will make the mould available to anyone who wants to use it if it all works as planned.
We should be operational again in a few days as we have sourced a propeller and a refurbished dagger board ready to refit.
I will also finish documenting the rose joint modifications we made to our steering linkage to remove the backlash and post it to the site for anyone who's interested.
It was great to meet you all.

The Hydraulic steering for
Submitted by mike.clarke on
The Hydraulic steering for the Mac 26 is a 'Hydrokit 1' from Southern Cross marine - I've attached the tech data sheet and the quote I got from them earlier this year. I decided to replace the crude linkage with stainless rose joints to get rid of the backlash before deciding if I wanted to instal the hydraulics. The rose joints made it much better with more feel so I still haven't decided if I want to spend that much on hydraulics.
Thank you for your enquiry.
As discussed today the ideal system for your McGregor 26M is the HyDrive Hydra Kit system.
You may notice the choice of helms below are commercial rated, which is the only type of helm that should be used for the unique style of the 26M.
HYDRAKIT consists of the following;
1 x 212T N8 cylinder + fittings
1 x 1.5M stainless remote cable with adaptor
1 x 401N8 helm + fittings with rear mount kit OR 101N8 helm unit (as in attachment)
1 x 15M coil of N8 nylon tube
2 x 1 litres of Ultra 15 HyDrive oil
1 x Manual and bleeder kit
Price £815.00 plus VAT

Such a shame for me that I had to depart on the Friday - for a soggy wedding and similar weather, camping in Galloway. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Richardsons on board Sonny and also with John P on Ashanti - great fun with both. I am heading to Whitehaven on Sunday with a view to 4 days around Isle of Man - I will update on how this goes. Spoke to Jim R and Susan last night (sold Pengwyn to a nice man from Gloucester and now moored with new boat in Tarbert) and promised them I'd go up for Whitsun week, 2019 - all Maccers welcome. I have uploaded photographs from last week to the gallery but I struggled to get them in chronological order and it rejected my comments too, not witty enough I suspect. The rose joints I used link
Submitted by mike.clarke on
The rose joints I used link attached - they are 316 stainless so full salt water compatible. Part No.852-410 from WDS ltd £9.78 each - I'm still working on the final part which is the linkage to the motor link to the steering tiller - the 180 degree bend is difficult to make and seems a little unnecessary from the mechanics point of view - if /when I work out how to make that with a rose joint I'll share. The rose joints remove nearly all the back lash dead movement so you can feel what's happening as well as making the wheel much lighter as it removes a lot of unnecessary friction. I've fitted three - on the two ends of the steering tie bar and the motor connection.
I've included a couple of photos of the rose joint on the motor linkage - I also have them on the ends of the rudder linkage to give me some adjustment and a much better rudder feedback when sailing. You can see how I isolate the motor form the steering when sailing. If you don't disconnect the motor there is no feel/ feedback when sailing making it impossible to sail well close on the wind. Remember how much feedback you get in a sailing dinghy when sailing with a tiller and extension!

I just realised I forgot to
Submitted by mike.clarke on
I just realised I forgot to mention - if you fit the rose joints they use 10mm metric bolts and have metric threads but the existing steering is held together with 3/8 inch UNC bolts which fit in a 9.525 mm hole - so to fit the rose joints you need new 10mm bolts (Screwfix are the cheapest I could find) and you need to ream out the existing holes in the rudder tiller arms with a tapered hand reamer to 10mm - its not particularly difficult but a bit of work as you can't get a drill in and you only need to remove 0.25 mm all round the existing hole to get a good tight fit. The only moving part is then the rose joint bearing which is large and has very little friction, is sealed and lubricated for life with no dead movement or backlash. The rose joint is screwed into a threaded stainless rod connecting nut (again from Screwfix) welded to the existing or our case a new stainless part.
Hope this is useful

Hi John
We were based in Gillingham until 2013. We went to Burnham and back via Havengore. On the outward trip the wind was due west and generated a following sea im the Thames which was a surprise in force 4. Fortunately things improved as we headed across the Maplin sands. On the return wind was due South and we had a good voyage back. Need to aware of swell if wind onshore on Maplin sands particularly because of limited depth.
