Newsletter 107

Forums:

Yesterday and today I posted - second class - the MacGregor Sailor, Newsletter 107. I hope it reaches you all safely. The sellophane envelopes can be re-cycled. Please note that on the reverse of the cover sheet with your address on, Rick has provided details of the MOA's new bank account which some of you will need when you re-new your membership in the New Year.

Feedback or corrections or additional info regarding any aspect of the Newsletter is always welcome.

Engine problems

Forums:

Hi all

Apologies to Paul for posting under the “outboard fins” post I miss posted! My problem has been the Yamaha 50 I’ve and a series of problems. The engine is 15 years old and 1260 hours

A continual ‘code28’ indicating that signal gear position switch was at fault and had to be replaced eventually I’d kept asking the Mechanic to change it albeit he thought it was of no importance.

The tilt switch reads up now continuously I’m not going to anything about that as the Yamaha parts are painfully expensive (and I can see where the engine is)!

'Pandora'

Forums:

Hi all, my first post having just joined the owners club (please be gentle ha ha).

So I've agreed to buy a 26X 'Pandora' and I wondered if anyone knew the boat? I've not actually picked her up yet, but wondered what I should look out for?

She's got a Honda 50hp 4 stroke which I've negotiated a service prior to pick up, along with a trailer service as I'm towing her a couple of hundred miles home.

Sails look in good condition, and other than a lack of VHF radio and a wind instrument, she seems to have everything I'm looking for (cockpit tent, cushions, etc etc).

Electric outboard

Forums:

I'm planning to buy an electric outboard motor, one for a wayfarer dinghy and possibly one for poppy in place of the Honda petrol that I have. I just think it'd be nice to have silence because I'm now doing a lot of motoring on loch Erne. Does anyone have any advice and or recommendation for both a good small and a medium size outboard?

Newsletter 107 Autumn 2021 - articles please

Forums:

It is that time again. I hope to start work on this in the next week or so aiming to have it with you by end of October. I'd be grateful for any contributions: accounts of day trips, incidents, long cruises, motoring or sailing, modifications, technical observations, reviews of stuff, introductions from members new - or old, ideas, suggestions and photographs.

So Many Mac's at Largs

Forums:

Hi all,

We trailered our 26X up to Largs last Friday and were amazed to see 5 other Mac's there already! Apart from the big Mac each year I have never seen so many in one place and re-assuring to know that they must be a good boat for the coastal waters of the Clyde.

We have booked ours there for a month and will try and make as much use as we can given the annoyance of work and other "duties" Hopefully we might meet some of the owners, perhaps they are on this forum!

David and Lynn.

Outboard Fins (Doel Fin)

Forums:

Hi All,

I was able to take Lupus out sans mast and with a fairly flat sea and was able to stretch her legs a bit. I noticed that she needs a little help getting on the plane and staying there. I think the prop pitch is good for an Ali and will be looking at a stainless steel 4 blade next year. However I'm thinking of getting some Doel Fin outboard Fins to lift the bum a bit.

Id be interested in any views or information of people trying them. Or if you have tried a 4 blade stainless prop.

Guide for inexperienced & new to sailing

Forums:

Hi Rick & all,

Having sold Star & now (too late) given a lot of thought to our inexperience of Mac's and Slipways, I have written a guide that, in retrospect, I wish I had done beforehand.

So below, what do you think?, should this be offered to new members with an apology if I'm teaching them to suck eggs, as the saying goes.

Retrieving a Macgregor 26M from the water.

1). Approaching the Slipway mooring/pontoon:

2). Coil 2 ropes on the correct side and have the ‘BOAT HOOK' handy to retrieve ropes from water or assist with helpers if necessary.
