Centreboard removal 26C

Forums:

Having listened to sound advice at the zoom meeting I decided to remove my centreboard to check it ...
And this is why you should check the centreboard once in a while. The cables were frayed, the leading edge is badly damaged. Only been painted where is drops down in the trailer.
Please see pictures ..

Any advice welcome! I'm assuming the pairs of holes top and bottom are to let water / air drain in and out?
(Also having made a 9/16 bent spanner discovered the nuts were not that size .... so I have 2 bend spanners now)

twin rudders and steering

I am probably late to the pass as usual but have just read an article explaining why boats with a single engine and twin rudders are less manoeuvrable moving forward at slow speeds.

When turning hard a port or starboard to berth alongside the pontoon by inclination I always push the throttle forwards a tad to increase speed and help turn the boat .

It seems that the science is that the wash from the propeller is moving clear astern rather than washing over the rudders while with a single rudder it washes over it giving it a grip to improve steering at low speeds.

Covid 19

Forums:

In response to Sunday’s Government announcement that unlimited outdoor activity will be permitted in England, from Wednesday 13 May 2020; the Crouch Harbour Authority Policy is to ask river users to continue to follow Government Guidance on exercising outdoors and maintaining social distancing guidelines. The CHA would like to see the Crouch and Roach boating community take a considerate and a responsible approach. Please remember, that if something goes wrong, there is the potential that it may put further and avoidable pressure on the Emergency Services.

Dear Members

In my new role as MOA Editor I am currently trying to understand the publishing software that I need to master in order to continue the tradition of magazine style newsletters that now number over 100 - all of which can be found on the website. I imagine that, like sailing itself, I will need perseverance, practise and patience. I am also sure that I will need your help, so this is an appeal to all members for contributions to the next MOA magazine.

KEEL CHIPPING

john.pompei's picture

Yesterday I removed my keel (M) to antifoul it.

As you can see from the pictures it is chipped on the trailing edge of the upper part.

When I last removed it 2 years ago there was some damage to the bottom end which I repaired but the upper portion was fine.

I have checked the slot and that does not seem to be damaged it the upper area as you can see.

I can't see how this type of damage can happen unless something had jammed down the slot which hasn't occurred and as there is no damage to the rest of the keel it seems a mystery to me.
