Spreaders for 26M

Forums:

I have a 2.5metre length of aluminium tubing surplus to requirements. I am replacing the spreaders on my 26M and bought twice the length needed just in case of problems! I am prepared to pre-cut to the correct length and package same ready for onwards transmission. I am asking £10 plus carriage.

Navigation is a series of plots. In fog the plot thickens...

My Centerboard has gone!

Forums:

The Gael (26X) has been moored on Loch Creran since April and survived the storms in May (I thought) until I noticed that the centre board cable had broke. Thought no more about it and bought 8mm line to replace wire and rope combo. Went over the side in my shortie yesterday to thread rope through centre board and found no centre board!
Does any one have any information on if it is possible to get a replacement, or maybe the dimension I would need to get one made?

Macs are a little tippy aren't they?

Forums:

When sailing in gusty conditions, things certainly get exciting quickly. I sail in the upper reaches of the River Tamar, which has nice calm water, but the wind does tend to gust somewhat, and with the ballast only in the bottom of the hull, [ie not in the keel] the first 10 -30 degrees of tippiness can happen very quickly sometimes. Other than be quick to release the mainsheet, itself no mean feat sometimes because of the angle it is cleated, and reefing down early, I don't suppose there is anything one can do about it?

26C Centreboard hoist line

Forums:

Hi All,

this weekend, the centreboard hoist line on my 26C failed at the centreboard attachment. It was attached by wire cable, The boat is still in the water (Board is temporarily lashed in the up position), but I am unable to determine what the original attachment method was. Are there any drawings, photos available ? is there room in the slot for a shackle ? - I'm trying to get prepared before paying to get the boat lifted out of the water next weekend - regards Peter

Mainsail

Forums:

I wondered what people do with their mainsails when they take them down.

There is a lot of sailcloth to deal with when sailing singlehanded, and when you don't have a mainsail handling system like a lazy jack or some sort of stacking system to drop it into it can get quite exciting trying to flake it down onto the boom.

I tend to take the sail off the halyard and roll it up from the top and tie it onto the boom with sail ties and elastics before putting the cover on, but I wondered what others are doing with their mainsails.

Anchor Drag

Forums:

Hi all, we had some trouble with our anchor not holding 'Dixie' our 26m over the weekend. We have what I think is a standard 'Fortress' Danforth type Anchor (1.8kgs), which is attached to about 13m of chain and about 8m of warp. It was blowing about F5 and the anchor when fully deployed with 21m of 'scope' in about 3m of water the anchor wouldn't hold Dixie.

Trailer Maintenance

Forums:

I have now owned GladNick for over two years and have never inspected the wheel bearings nor brakes of the four wheeled trailer. Am I tempting fate by giving them the 'once over'?

Is there a maintenance schedule or 'workshop manual' for a trailer that specifies tolerances for brake shoes and the correct grease to use?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Fuel economy

Forums:

I have a Mac 19 with a chunky Suzuki DT 40 C 2 stroke outboard. It has been recently serviced so I took the Mac out for a leisurely 5 knot trip on the Solent this weekend. I was hoping to get the sail up but alas not enough wind, but I had already filled the ballast tank, so I motored across from Southsea to Bembridge a trip of about 6 miles. To my horror I consumed 7 litres of fuel in 5 miles :o . Surely that can't be right can it?????

isle of man

Forums:

Hi
I'm thinking of sailing to IOM for a few days over the easter break. If anyone has any knowledge, local or otherwise, of berths or beaching sites around the south end of the island it would be really helpful.

Starter Solinoid Mercury bigfoot 50HP

Forums:

Hi, Our starter solinoid is sticking after starting, getting fed up of lifting the engine cover and tapping the solinoid with the winch handle...... had a look online and only found one company in the UK that quoated £115 +vat, seems steep for a relay, the US list them at $60 but they don't ship outside the USA.

Does anyone know of a good UK Mercury dealer or can anyone advise a similar replacemnt from another manufacturer, the part no is 825096T01 for mercury.
