Boat Watch AIS

Forums:

I recently discovered this free app. BOAT WATCH

It shows in real time the position of Ships transmitting their AIS data worldwide. From what I can see the ships shown are those using Class A transceivers which means mostly large vessels.

Although I have not had yet been able to try this app out afloat, it would seem to me that it could be most useful when navigating area’s such as the Thames estuary, especially if you subscribe to the upgrade which allows access to full data transmitted and includes

Ships name , MMSI & Photo

Caps/covers in cabin ceiling

Plastic caps/covers

Hi all

I am going to fit LED cabin lights in ‘Star,’ our 26M and have been wondering about the many caps/covers in the ceiling. I assume these are covers for captive nuts. Do they come out without breaking, and if so, will I be able to get wiring through to link lights under the sliding roof?

Also there must be a route for the radio (positioned starboard side next to the round mirror) aerial to the mast base? Is that route tubed or just a space between the ceiling and deck?

John Anstice-Brown's MacGregor 19

Forums:

Some of you will have read in the recent MacGregor magazine an article written by Simon Anstice-Brown about his adventures with his father John on his 19. The boat was an impetuous purchase from the Boat Show and went on to serve the family well, with many adventurous cruises. I spoke to Mrs Anstice-Brown today and she now wants to sell the boat which she says has been on the drive, unused for the last 10 years. She thinks the engine is in good order - a grandson said so - but she wonders about the trailer which she says looks in poor condition.

Thanks for all your help

Forums:

Hi All

We have now sold Stargazey and I wanted to say a big thank you to all the forum members for their help and support during the 5 years we have been members. There was so much help and advice on this forum. We really enjoyed the time aboard and Stargazey enabled us to find out we sort of like this sailing thing. We'll still be in The Solent, so may see some of you on the water.

I'll keep an eye on the forums in case I can offer any help until our membership expires. I think we get thrown off after that :-)

Happy Sailing All

Sail for M

Forums:

I’m seriously thinking of replacing the main on ASHANTI as I think original is now a bit tired and has only one reefing point which proved to be insufficient in F4-5 winds.

I have seen a number of options on BWY website and wonder if any members have experience of these. The model which interests me is the 2 reef flat top fully battened made from 5.0 high modulus Dacron loose footed and has no bolt ropes at $1099

Windows on M

Forums:

I want to replace the two windows in the coach roof by the mast as they have crazed and leak. I think the leak is due to them being trod on and as they seem to be quite thin they bow under the weight thus causing the seal to part.

My first thought was to replace them with thicker acrylic which would bow less if stood upon but it would be necessary to have the edges chamfered so that there was not an edge to trip over. I guess this would be quite expensive.

Another idea might be to get replacements made in toughened glass , I have no idea what this would cost though.

Anchors

Anchors

Hi all, having just bought ‘Star’ and looked at the Fortress FX7 anchor supplied with the boat was amazed that it only weighs 1.8kg. I know the chain does most of the work. My question is: would we be better with a 4kg Rocna Vulcan which sets first time nearly every time and, according to test results holds really well. I would be considering the 4kg due to the potential difficulty of getting up back up! I think the recommended size for the length of a Mac is 9kg, but would I ever get it back without a windlass?

Planar Diesel heater

Forums:

Is anyone using a planar diesel heater on their Mac. Ann & I have just purchased ‘Star’, a 2007 26M which basically has been laid up for a couple of years. Amongst the many jobs that are necessary, I would like to fit a low cost heating system and it looks like the planar self contained unit from eBay at around £170, or an Eberspatcher which is very expensive and not really an option. From the spec the Planar systems are very cheap to run. Am thinking of cutting a hole for the ducting into the companion way door, stand the unit secured to the pedestal.

Help with sea trial

Forums:

I have a 26x for sale at Simpson marine in Newhaven. An offer for the boat has been accepted and a sea trial planned for 20 October.
I am concerned that the staff at the mostly motorboat Simpson Marine may not be able to get the best out of the Mac.
Is there a member in the area who would be willing to help with the sea trial?
Reasonable expenses would be offered.
Many
Thanks
Colin
