selling Poppy my 26C

Forums:

Hello everyone I am going to be moving to Ireland this year so am thinking of selling Poppy with a mooring on Windermere. I am looking for some advice on the price to ask as I am feeling a bit bewildered. She is a 1991 26C with standard equipment. She has a single axle trailer and a 8HP Honda outboard. I paid 10,500 for her in 2012 which I am now thinking was too much. Looking on apolloduck there is a range of prices for UK boats from 8,500 to 15,000. There is a similar boat to mine on boatsandoutboards for 11,500 also in Cumbria. I thought this was encouraging.

Hello

Forums:

Hello one and all,

I just noticed my PayPal renewal debit go through and I was amazed to realise that had been a member for a year without saying hello, so hello!

Joining the MOA was very much of a step of faith as we don't own a boat (never have) and the only prospect in that direction was the hope of retiring and moving to Cornwall sometime.

Channel Crossing?

Forums:

A few of us here in Cambridgeshire are meeting to discuss a possible channel crossing sometime during the spring or summer involving X's and M's. My experience level is devoted to the waters in and around the Orwell so far.

Understood is the need for a very favorable and stable weather window, use of a life raft, and staying out of shipping lanes. I am not convinced that this is a great idea, but am open minded.

Any further advice would be very welcome.

Thanks!

New member - advice welcomed

Forums:

Hi

I am a new member who is planning to buy a MacGregor 26. A bit of background, I live on the River Severn in Worcestershire and am lucky enough to have my own floating pontoon in the garden. I am planning to buy a 26 and keep it on the pontoon for day to day use as a motor boat and trailer it for sailing trips away. I have a couple of questions:

1) I am currently thinking about the 26X because I prefer the larger cockpit. Is there any major difference between the early and later models X's?

26X Keel Advice Please

Forums:

Last year I spent a lot of time renovating the swing keel on my 26X, including replacing the extension which provides the stop when fully lowering the keel. I made a wedge from some reasonably hard wood, screwed it into the keel using some hefty stainless steel screws, and tidied it up with lots of marine epoxy filler. I just checked the keel while under the boat and my fabricated extension is missing, with the keel damaged where the screws have been ripped out. This would account for the keel sticking down when I last tried to raise it.

Tides article

Forums:

Dear Rick,

I feel I must leap to the defence of my namesake:

To dismiss Newton's equilibrium theory of tides as “utterly wrong” is unfair in the same way it would be to dismiss the law of supply and demand because it doesn't accurately describe the global economic system or to rubbish ohms law because it fails to deal with semiconductors and superconductors.

It does describe the very basic astronomical forces that produce tidal effects i.e. the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun.

Future of the MOA Library

Forums:

This thread is to discuss ideas following on from the notice of closure in the latest issue of the magazine.

For information, the library lent 3 items at the 2014 AGM, 4 at the 2015 AGM and nothing has gone out by post in the last couple of years. Personally I am of the very strong opinion that the library itself now serves no really useful purpose with the advent of the electronic age…
