Re: Message from Will Formby regarding 26X Centre Board Assy

Will,
I have never heard of any problems with the actual Bracket and pin assembly for the 26X centreboard, either via the UK Association or on the US based forums. But there have been problems in the past with the hole in the centre board for the pin. The hole can get elongated by wear and very occasionally the pin cutting through the top of the centreboard, so causing the centreboard to drop off the pin. Usually if this happens, the board is still attached to the boat by its control line, so it can be recovered and repaired.
To help prevent this occuring, when the boat is on its trailer say for the winter, it's a good idea to drop the centreboard and its bracket/pin assy in order to inspect the board for any wear damage on its pin hole.
This happened to my 26X in 99/00 but it was a known batch problem with the build of the centreboard and MacGregor replaced the board through warranty for effected boats and I have never had any problem with wear since then.
Cheers
Morris

I had similar problem to Morris with a weakened swivel area (similar aged boat) . Have found that the nut/bolt on the strop connection is more of a problem with rusting through, maybe because the boat's in the water/ mud all season. If you do still want bracket dimensions my keel is dropped at moment and could measure bracket up.

Hi,
If you climb down deep into the stern berth and identify / segregate the steering cable from the bunch coming out of the steering binnacle and down to the stern on the starboard side there is normally the make (usually Morse) and the part number written on the outside sleeve of the cable. You should then be able to source it from any reputable stockist of outboard engine steering cables. But if you get stuck then give me another shout and I know a mob in Putney (London) that can supply the cable - once you have a part number.
Not yet known if there will be another Scottish rally this season. May know more aftert the AGM.

Regarding water in the bilges, I had a similar problem with my 2001 26x.Eventually traced it to the flat mast supports flanges ( where they enter the sides of the hull ) sealing with epoxy did not help as there is slight movement. Finally cured with 'SILKAFLEX' sealant. Also ,- had problems with centre-board corrosion of 'CENTRE-BOARD HANGER' due to stray electical currents in Marina, bought spare from Magregor UK. & had orignal re-welded in Stainless Steel as spare, worth checking HANGER periodically, as it only took 6 months of 'Marina life to corrode mine. Re Centre-Board Hanger, I also have had trouble in the past but this was much reduced by priming the complete unit and two coats of Hard antifouling. Seems to do the trick.
