Fuller update from Richard

Fuller update from Richard via Marion. Richard heading for Plymouth.

Continuing news on retired, Richard Kerswell's sail, alone, around the UK in his MacGregor 26 yacht, Pegasus, to raise funds for two worthy charities paying a little back for his wonderful childhood in Tanganyika, now Tanzania.

13th October. Sailing onwards to Poole Harbour, were he was given permission to moor that evening at the Pool Yacht Club. Unfortunately, he was unable to stay there and was moved on to another part of the harbour. Pat Worthington, another old friend from his school days, arranged to meet up with him, helped him get to a garage to refuel and treated him to a home cooked meal at her house, which was a real treat! Thank you Pat for your help and support, it makes such a difference. As the cost of the harbour fees were high at Poole, Richard decided to move on to Lyme Regis.

15th October. This move had to be very carefully and thoroughly thought about and planned as going around Portland Bill can be extremely notorious due to the tidal race. https://eoceanic.com/sailing/routes/51/rounding_portland_bill_by_the %27... .

Richard rang to say he was elated to have got his judgement correct, starting with a speed of 8 knots but the yacht slowed down to 6 and sailed straight through, choosing the inner route, hugging the coastline and carried onto Lyme Regis, passing Chisel beach and Bridport, where he moored for the night - 54.5nm. Next stop was Torbay on the 16th; left at 11.30a.m. sailing into headwind, arriving at 4.30p.m. with a nautical mileage of 31.5 having had a reasonable sail. He was delighted to see two bottle nose dolphins that came into the harbour but he hadn't got his phone on him to take a photo. He was leaving early this morning on his way to Plymouth.

Richard started at 8 years old with a dingy and began to learn navigation at 14, hence his love of boats and experience. He has nearly ended his courageous adventure, sailing alone, so do share again please to get more publicity! Many thanks for all donations and support, really appreciated. #givetheworldashot #orphansinthewild

Richard has reached Plymouth

Richard has reached Plymouth after a challenging sail yesterday. See Marion's update below. He's nearly there!

https://www.peoplesfundraising.com/fundraising/my-page-1623944303270

17th October. Richard left Torbay at 9.30a.m. on his way to Plymouth passing Start Point in Devon which almost the most southerly peninsular in England. He didn't quite get his timing right this time around the peninsular so he encountered an overflow giving him a short nasty sea for a while, very uncomfortable. (https://www.yachtingmonthly.com/sailing-skills/sailing-through-overfalls...) He cut the throttle back and faced the yacht into the waves and pushed through. When he rang mid afternoon, the sea was calmer and had the throttle at 700rmp, the jib was out keeping him on course and was tootling along at 2 knots, he then upped the revs to get a move on, the jib was making off course, so had to take the helm again, just as he had finished his lunch. He passed Cawsand and the Plymouth Breakwater

breakwater-incredible-15million-story-3993958) entered Plymouth Harbours and tried to get into Sutton, but because the harbour master hadn't seen the message and we couldn't get hold of anyone, Pegasus was not allowed in with no offer of help nor suggestion of which harbour/marina to try. After turning around and looking for somewhere to moor, he is now docked in Mayflower Marina arriving at 5.30p.m. a lot further out than he wanted, having sailed 45.8n.miles.
Sue has joined him in Plymouth for a few days. Hope you both have a super time after being apart for almost four months.

Will let you know when he leaves Plymouth to head to Penzance, home, after nearly 2,500 nautical miles!
He has nearly ended his courageous adventure, sailing alone! Well done Richard, we take our hats off to you!

Knowing your sailing ability

Knowing your sailing ability and long distance solo sailing experiences, Richard,I had no doubt you had the knowledge and ability to complete this adventure. Shame a few Marina's didn't play the game. Me, I would be dreaming of a decent oggie and a pint of Doombar in my home port. Hope the final leg of your journey goes smoothly.

Well Done

Simon Armitage.

I had a message from Richard

I had a message from Richard yesterday to say that he had reached Mount's Bay which I believe is on the west side of the Lizard peninsular and a hop across to Penzance. There were high winds down here yesterday and it's persisting it down this morning. I hope he has found a sheltered spot to rest up. However, things are supposed to brighten up later and into tomorrow. Richard wrote that he was planning to arrive home at '1400 on Monday by the sailing club in the big car park.' So those are the directions forr anyone in the area who is able to wave him in. I would urge anyone reading this who has not yet found a few pennies or more to donate to his charity page, that now would be a good time to do so. Richard's achievement is immense and it would be a good thing for his chosen charities to benefit accordingly, in my view.

We gave Richard a warm

We gave Richard a warm welcome in Penzance almost 4 months after he had embarked in Pegasus, his MacGregor 26M. He has sailed 2570nm. He was on good form. Thanks for recent contributions to his causes - it's not too late. See below Marion's facebook update and some pics from today.

Richard’s back HOME in Penzance.
He decided to leave earlier due to the low tide and getting into Albert Pier in time before it almost dried out! He crept into the pontoon with enough water to spare! WELL DONE Richard we are all really proud of your amazing achievement! Wow - 2,570 nautical miles, some feat battling all sorts of heavy seas, lovely calm seas, super people, wonderful wildlife sightings, gorgeous country/cliff views and memories that will always be with you.

Thank you for the help given at various harbours, your support and donations coming in, very much appreciated

Great to meet some of your friends Richard on the Pontoon and thanks for the Bucks Fizz celebration!

Many congratulations on

Many congratulations on completing this circumnavigation, Richard.

Over the years, Mac owners have made some amazing long distance voyages but this must go down as the greatest.

Welcome home and I hope you get your shore legs back soon.

Good Luck
