I'm a bit surprised at the local response, but I've only had replacements made by taking the originals so the rigger could copy directly - and thus re-use the bits of attached hardware. You probably got away with duty & vat because the value was too low for them to bother! A good price anyway.
Regarding the double Nicopress that MacGregor use, my rigger said it was completely unnecessary for strength or reliability. He suggested it was just a quick way of tidying the loose end, rather than trimming precisely!
