Something learnt today

Something learnt today.Out today on Ashanti (M26) in a 3 to 5 on the Crouch.Applying my dinghy skills do not always work on a larger boat. What appeared to be enough speed to tack she would not go from port to starboard.I'm thinking less foresail might help.To make matters worse using full width of a river not so clever either.Gave up and did a jibe but running out of water she was pretty slow to react.Lucky that lovely engine came to the rescue. Not for the first time.
Pinching on close haul not quick enough so playing the mainsail with the gusts. All good fun this learning curve.

Hi Gary,

Hi Gary,

Did you back the jib ?

That always seemed to work for me.

Regards,

John

Hi all, regarding tacking,

Hi all, regarding tacking, you MUST have suffice to 'way' on to get through the wind ,otherwise it is near impossible !

This is, sadly, not uncommon.

This is, sadly, not uncommon.

I've had problems getting far enough round to back the jib; waves and tide stop the bow going round enough.

Bear away, build up speed and hard over mostly, but not always works, then backing the jib when possible.

In extremis, send a crew down below and ask them nicely to sit as forward as possible while you turn but do build up speed first.

If you are not racing don't be proud and try some motor.

Finally, jibe around.

Good luck

Simon
