I think decent marine polish

I think decent marine polish will do the trick, Gary, but it doesn't last for ever and needs re-doing from time to time. We have had several discussions on this web about this topic. I remember being told the original hull colour is black, the white is a coating and thus the black bits are the original hull.

I don't find that just polish

I don't find that just polish will bring up to he shine. The black oxidises just like my blue hull and needs a light buffing with Ferecla G3 colour restorer. I use a buffer with variable speed and a sponge head that Velcro on. Alternatively elbow grease! The Ferecla is available at Halfords or a Chandler. Force 4 do the buffer for about 55.00 . If I didn't have the hull to do I would probably just rub it.

Technical note: that's not actually quite correct. The hulls were made in a mould by first masking the black areas and spraying white gel coat. The masking was then removed and black gel coat sprayed over the entire area. So the black bits are just black gel coat, while the white parts are also gel coat but have black underneath. This is why, if you sand or even buff down the white too much, the black will start to show through.

I believe the reason was so the hull is not translucent, which would be the case if only white were used.

I think that you are right

I think that you are right about the black being done after the white, as when I tried to bring up the white with some fine compound I found that the black was merging with the white. I'm going to try and mask the white off and just use elbow grease. If this doesn't work then I have plenty of black gloss paint at the last resort.
