I am considering buying a Macgregor, possibly a 26M.Is there anyone in the Solent area who would be prepared to show me over their boat? I live in East Sussex but am based at Langstone Harbour.

Hi Geoffrey. Myself and another member are planning to sail Friday this week probably overnight to the Island. My boat is on the Hamble off Mercury Yacht Harbour so if you'd like to pop over Friday am that would be ok. I shall have to look at the tides but we might even sail up your way to drop you back.

Hi Roly
Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. Let me know your departure time and we could arrive in time for a look over and chat.
Ref sailing to Langstone, thanks for the offer but we will be travelling from home that day.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Geoff
Keith and I plan to meet at 10 am at mercury yacht harbour on the Hamble river. We shall go and get the boat and can stop a short while on the marina pontoons to demonstrate. Bring your deck shoes and coat if you like and we might manage a short sail. Keith and I will head off in the afternoon. If you thought you might want to sail then you could even meet us down at Hamble and we could pick up from the jetty..at maybe 11am. That way it would be quicker for us to drop you back.
I trust you have by mobile number from the members list or magazine. .

Hi Roly
Thanks , my wife, Sylvia and I will aim to be at Mercury Marina around 10.30a.m. And will then contact you by mobile phone to confirm where to meet. A short sail would be great but we don’t wish to delay your departure.
regards
Geoff
Hello Geoffrey
i have my Macgregor 26 moored in Langstone Harbour I have constant problems with the centre board , get's clogged up with mud ? Through I would let you know if you are thinking about mooring only ok if you can afford to moor on a front row .
Regards Chris Williams (YASSOU)
Hi Chris
Thanks for the info, what do you mean by mooring on the front row? My mooring is on the E.C.A. Pontoon’s.
Geoff
Hello Geoff
Just a friendly advice do not let a MacGregor sit in a drying out mud mooring ,the mud (will) get into the centreboard Cases , I have had this problem for the past 10 years, apart for that the MacGregor is a ideal boat for Solent sailing especially sandy beaches,
Best Regards Chris Williams (YASSOU)

The mud pro Pam may not be so bad for the M . I was in a drying mooring for several years without a problem.

Hi Geoff. Will plan to see you tomorrow at about 10.30 at Mercury.

Re stuck swing keel, I stop mine from going all the way back up by fastening a length of cheap rope under the hull. To unstick before launch I used a length of that plastic parcel strapping - looped it over the keel then pulled it back and forth along the length, stop when you get near the lifting line and wear eye protection. You can also plumb a hose pipe into the keel housing through where the lifting line goes, if you let it run for an hour or so there's a very satisfying gurgling sound when the keel drops. Took me years of frustration and no sailing before I got the routine right.
