Transfer of ownership

Hi all,

Next question.

I bought the 26X last year and now trying to sort out a few things before the season.

The boat came with a VHF DSC fitted and I have also bought a handheld VHF DSC radio (new). I know the MMSI of the fitted radio as it comes up on the display. The new radio is blank and is asking me to enter one.

I have a "Short Range Certificate" from a few years ago and it does cover DSC, although I have never used that so will need to brush up a little.

Now the question.... What (who) do I need to do (tell) to make sure all the relevant authorities know about the change?

Hi David

Hi David

It's all handled by Ofcom, the page to start is here.

You need to register an account, then you can apply for the licences you need (it's all free!).

You will need a ships radio licence for your fixed radio, you should be able to enter the existing MMSI for it.

You will also need a ships portable radio licence for your handheld, and you can request a new MMSI for that.

You'll be issued with printable licences as PDFs, which technically you should print out and keep on the boat.

It's all quite simple once you get into it!

Thank you Rick.

Thank you Rick.

Itried what you suggested but had a few computer problems during the process so I will try again today when I have a bit of time.

So how does transfer of ownership affect the Small Ships Register.

I am not sure my Mac had been registeted on the SSR as i can see no evidence of a number displayed on the boat. I'm not sure I need it on there at present as it just seems relevant if i take her abroad?

And then there is the coast guard registration scheme CG66. Is that separate too!

David.

Yep, these are all separate

Yep, these are all separate systems!

SSR is unrelated to Ofcom, and is entirely optional. The main purpose is to prove ownership and nationality if you take the boat abroad. Even then it's not actually required. I've trailered to Europe and Ireland without problems, and I'm not SSR-registered. I don't know how you handle change of ownership, but should be on the SSR web site.

CG66 gives the coastguard information about you, your boat, and people to contact, which can speed up their response if you get into trouble. Worth registering.

Thanks Rick,

Thanks Rick,

So that's a possible 3 separate organisations to inform of a change. Wouldn't it be nice if it were all centralised somewhere. But then on the other hand it is quite nice that at least here in the UK most are optional and we have less rules than other countries.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep the Mac for a long to justify the effort of registration. I do hope she floats when we launch here tomorrow!
