Blue Water Yachts

Hi Guys & Girls,

I have finally re-ordered the rubbing strip and end caps to replace these on 'Lonach and hopefully will get this done for ext season as I am going to keep her now after several derisory offers it doesn't make sense to sell her for little more than an old banger would fetch.

I have viewed the new website for MacGrepogor parts which seems a little lesss complicated than the old website and wondered if anybody else has come across this site: 'http://shop.bwyachts.com/category-s/106.htm

Lots of spare parts avaialble but subject to import tax and shippping so let hope Brexit will make trading with USA less expensive seems its an American Yacht.

Happy Christmas & New Year everyone.

Hi Richard,

Hi Richard,

I ordered a quick release engine kit and some other small parts from BWY back in September and luckily had some family staying in the US so had them delivered to them and they brought them home in their luggage.

It crossed my mind that maybe the Association could collate members orders and say make a purchase every 3 months or so thus minimizing the individual shipping costs - the only difficulty would be knowing what the exchange rate was going to be and what duty rate/VAT amount was going to be charged.

Another approach might be to see if some discount could be arranged with BWY if the Association promoted their Mac products to the members .

As a new member maybe this has been tried in the past ?

Just some thoughts on a dank December day .

Seasons Greetings to All Members

Hi John

Hi John

Perhaps you might like to describe with, if possible pictures.describing the bwy engine quick release kit and if you are happy with it.

I have looked at it on bwy’s website over the years but not quite got it. Also I stopped sailing with the engine up as the tilt mechanism has let me down in the past.

with reference to bwyachts I recently received a marketing email from them offering a (possibly their version) quick release kit. I’m probably on their records.

They were also offering Sails at reduced rates and whilst I still require a new jib perhaps members could comment on their preference vis a vis jib to Genoa as we generally sail in low to moderate winds in the Med, (the old saying it’s either too little or too much there) but have a cruising Chute which is beautiful when up but is not as easy as letting out a Genoa downwind.

Best wishes to all happy Christmas

Boat Model & Year: Mac M 2008

I have installed the Custom Steering kit which was quite straightforward and certainly makes disconnecting the engine from the steering easy, however as ASHANTI is ashore on the trailer for the winter I have not tried it on the water yet. I have also installed the wheel brake friction kit which was a bit more tricky as it involved unbolting the wheel from the binnacle and I managed to drop a few nuts and washers down it!!

My main reason for getting these parts was as a new Mac owner mostly sailing single handed I found leaving the wheel difficult with the engine up as its wight causes the helm to come over, and disconnecting with the standard fittings was very difficult. Whilst I hope being able to disconnect the engine simply should help, I am not so sure about the brake which does not seem to do much, but as I said earlier I've not yet tried it on the water.

As far as the Tiller arm is concerned it was on their website as an emergency tiler which seemed like a good idea reading about the problems some owners have had with Mac's steering but so far I don't have a clue how its intended to be used - Any help from members would be welcome.

I don't have the installation drawings for the steering kit at home with me, I think they are still on the boat but I will get them after Christmas and post them here for you to see.

I can't help re the sails being a new boy but I have Doyle sails and compared with the Sails on my previous Timpenny - 30 odd years old, the Mac's seem much lighter and will probably need replacing shortly.

This brings me bk to the points I made before about the Association trying to negotiate a discount with BWY for our members - does anyone know if this has been tried before ?

With the Seasons Greetings,

Hi Ian,

Hi Ian,

Hopefully you will see attached the BWY quick release installation instructions and photo of my installation on ASHANTI.

Thanks John

Thanks John

got that, engine disconnection looks good and straight forward the picture illustrates beautifully considering same.

as for the emergency tiller I would also love to know how this works, best perhaps to ask in a separate article I am looking at the American forums for more info. Fear of the steering failing is always on my mind.

As I/we rarely sail single handed, I haven’t fitted any aids, on the odd occasion it’s mostly motor. Have fun getting the Anchor up if there is wind and weather envying the Boats with electric an windlass

Hello together,

Hello together,

I would like to purchase (or make) a quick release for the engine. The 26M custom steering kit from Blue Water Yachts has been discussed previously here (now priced at $199...), see https://shop.bwyachts.com/product-p/5712-1m0.htm.

Are these available via members or are there any alternative mods I could consider in this regard?

Kind regards,

Thor

Hi Thorsten ,  I'm afraid we

Hi Thorsten , I'm afraid we don't have any stock or dealership on UK. While it may seem a bit pricy after shipping and tax for a few bits of metal I think it's probably worth it sine I understand that it fixes also the restricted turning of the outboard in one direction which is a design fault of the M. Jonathan Knight has researched quite a lot about constructing this mod.

Happy 'modding' everyone for 2024 , and good boating !

I tried building my own but

I tried building my own but was dissatisfied with the result. Having changed all the drive rods to Incorporate adjustable threads and having made a short extension to the fixed pin for the engine push rod so that the engine will sit straight. I now find that it is quite easy to disconnect the engine from the steering. Rather than a nut I use R clips.

Happy New Year all

I've actually sent off for a quick release bar a few weeks ago for our 26x. Once I have fitted & made sure that it works I will take it to an engineering chap I know & see if he can manufacture it at a much lower price.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.

Hi,

Hi,

HNY and appreciate all your comms! I have been in touch with BWY as might be ordering a few more bits before I get the boat back in the water.

There are quite a number of upgrades I would like to make to the boat ranging from safety to performance to comfort. Also, just ordered the EV100 but there is more to come. No doubt, one can go quite overboard with things (and not sure you ever see that money back!).

I'll probably post more updates and questions in the relevant sections (if I can find them..!). IMO, one of the best vids relating to (sensible) mods is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax4gIlyTyms. I guess, it very much depends on intended use and also frequency of use.

Cheers, Thor
