Which Marina?

I would love feedback on using River Nene as a cruising base. The only advantage I can see for me (being close to Peterborough) is proximity. My other considered option is the Ipswitch area.

While closer, it seems that the drive to and through either King's Lynn or Wisbech to get to the Barbour would be a nightmare. Levington is much further, but nearly all motorway.

Thoughts?

Re: Which Marina?

We had a holiday home near Wisbech when abroad David and considered living up there when we returned to the UK, however, chose Woodbridge instead. I have not sailed on the Nene but did some research. Wisbech Marina is relatively cheap - they have been trying to promote it and use it as a development centrepiece for a historic town that is economically challenged. Tidal range is huge. Marina is pokey - locals told me with the tidal flows, narrow channel etc mooring is not for the fainthearted depending on your berth. Wisbech is a long way from the Wash. The river is rather uninteresting IMO (like a tidal canal). You have the bridge at Sutton Bridge to get open. Certainly a much shorter drive for you though from Peterborough than the Orwell.

Best regards

Re: Which Marina?

Graham,

Thanks for your comments. This is pretty much a confirmation of what I was thinking. At this time, I think it's worth the drive to get to a more scenic site.
