Very droll Roly, I missed that first time round :D
I think the owner idea could have some mileage Colin, we are all proud of our boats and keen to introduce new owners into the fold as well as to support you in your brave venture. There is also a lot to learn that is Mac specific, and maybe a 'buddy' system could be used? Sadly I will be out of the country during the AGM, but as you say, it would be worth discussing the whole subject. I'll be sorry not to be able to meet you and Catherine as I am unlikely to be able to get over to your part of the world more than once in a blue moon, [if that!].
Certainly an interesting idea Paul. This says quite a lot about the sort of people who buy MacGregors "what a jolly good bunch of lads and lasses". I am not sure we would find this sort of attitude in other owners associations. No doubt we will meet up with you at some point. I will discuss the idea with others at the AGM This could be a positive idea for the association, owners wishing to sell boats, and it would also support new boat sales. My worries are around if the scheme was too successful we could all become inundated. Is there an issue if volunteers take visitors out on a boat and there is some sort of accident As Marlinspikemarine we have insurance specifically to cover 3rd party risks but would normal insurance cover this.
I am sure this could be managed simply with a competent skipper, possibly competent/experienced crew to help out, checked insurance, usual checks for safe sailing, safety equipment etc.
Maybe a checklist could be drawn up by some more experienced members for us all to follow. (just to provide the belt and braces)
We are not doing this for profit or business purposes so insurance should be okay. After all we do take friends, colleagues, family, neighbours other Macgregor members etc. out sailing.
I have just discovered that I have 60 or so friends who want to come out sailing during the summer.
Just doing a favour can come back and bite you if you haven't prepared properly.
I will be happy to offer in the near future but Sowenna is still being modified to suit inland waterway requirements but when we are ready will let you know and that we are available in East London at Gallions Point Marina on the Thames near City Airport.
"I would be happy to show people the "ropes"...."
