Just had the news that both Ray and I have passed the first assessment
of our Day Skipper Course . :D
I was ready to throw in the towel after week 5. :?
All that stuff about Magnetic North, Deviation, and Tidal Curves was
a bit much . But I was told to stick with it and it would all come
together and I had promised Ray that I would give it my best
shot, so a few weeks on and here we are with the first
' exam' passed and under our belts . :P
I can honestly say that I am looking forward to returning in
the New Year to start Passage Planning . :)
Any ladies out there thinking of doing the Day Skipper Course
who are perhaps feeling a little reticent.......all I can say is
"Go for it" cos if I can do it you surely can
:)

"Next stop, Cape Horn!" - or France at least.
Can I add my congrats, quite an achievement, and one I have been putting off for several years.
Merry Christmas to all.

Merry Christmas, and congrats. It does get better in the second half. Next step ... the practical part ;) . Which sailing school are you doing your course with ?

Hi
well done to Pauline and Ray on Day Skipper course, puts my wife and I to shame 8 seasons with 26M and no formal qualifications! well that is apart from the International certificate of Competence (power and Sail) gained when we took delivery of the M
I have just had Christmas lunch, watched the Queens speech and thought to look at the Mac website. Now you have given me, at least, a new Years resolution, Day Skipper course!

Just viewed post and realised that I have replied under Ray's log in.....sorry Ray.....tis Pauline replying......
Oh...thank you everyone for you kind responses.
I hasten to add that this is assessment no. 1 of 2 and then we have the practical to follow.
The practical is extremely expensive... £100 per day for a straight five days afloat or it can be done over a few weekends.
So bearing in mind we are both doing it that's a fair chunk of cash....but Ray would sooo like to charter abroad and for that you need a Day Skipper equivalent.
Down side for me is that I will have to share a boat with 4 guys!!
A few years ago that may have put a sparkle in my eyes, but now I'm a bit too set in my ways and I'm a little nervous about it. I'm sure the ladies will understand.
There are 'women only' crews, but I think I would rather be with Ray and, by the time I get to do the practical in the Spring months, I will know all the guys on the course very well ( we all go for a drinky poos after the evening class ;) )......so perhaps it won't be too bad.
Immo Hi....at the moment we are with doing the theory at the Nottage Institute at Wivenhoe and the tutor is part of the Brittania Sailing School which runs out of Shotley, so our thoughts are to continue with our tutor who will skipper the practical course.
Ian...Hi.....I'm rapt that we have encouraged a New Year's Resolution........great stuff. :D
Hope everyone had a peaceful Christmas.
