Hi Chris
Those of us with big beasties have them serviced in-place. Removing a 50hp from an X or M is a major operation, not something to be done just for servicing.
All boatyard engine specialists are accustomed to doing the work at the boat (with inboards it's not an option!). Have you tried asking your engineer if he will come out to you? If he won't I would try shopping around.

I bought an outboard sling for my 8 and 10hp engines; it allows for a decent purchase but still a two person operation. The last engineer I had said, if the engine's running well, leave it.....

Hi
I love doing all my own servicing. I have always jury rigged engine hoists, boat lifts etc. myself, all because I'm a bit bonkers and dont know when it would be far more sensible to use an expert. If it takes me three times as long and costs five times the price and it goes wrong six times until I eventually get it sorted, when I am then as pleased as punch. It is a mental defficiency.
My older daughters partner is a garage mechanic but they have no space. He recently bought a hydraulic ( should that be an hydraulic) engine lift, the young dont know about being thrifty, and it has been left in my garage. So far I have used it to lift the tow hitch of the boats trailer nice and high easing leveling the boat so that water drains out of the stern, when parked up.
The lift has quite a nice reach and would easily lift my big motor off the back. Manomano have a 2 ton engine hoist at £130 (https://www.manomano.co.uk/p/2t-heavy-duty-hydraulic-folding-workshop-en...) if you have the space, they do fold after a fasion but it's a lot to just sit around all year.. Alternatively hire one for about a £10 a day.
Best wishes Jonathan

Hi Chris
I usually take the boat on the trailer to the service workshop and they service it there,. In my case Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness.
