Web site improvements

Hello to all of our web site users

I've done a bit of re-organising of the web site (the first of several planned steps). This change is to tidy up the forum section for events, which was getting a bit messy with all the previous years' information.

The discussions of past events are no longer in the forum, but they are not lost! There is a new section in the top menu bar - Resources. In there is a link to the Past Events page, which contains all the old posts re-organised into an online book format.

Only discussions of this year's current events remain in the forum, and I have categorised them into Inland Waterways, Coastal, and Overseas, to help you focus on what you're interested in.

I hope you like the changes, feel free to post any comments you may have here. There are more changes to come, all aimed at making old but valuable information more accessible. Watch this space!

Hi Rick, many thanks for all

Hi Rick, many thanks for all your hard work, it's such a blessing!

Following on from my inappropriate use of the photo gallery, I did try to add an attachment to a post as you suggested but all I got was an empty box.

I'm guessing there must be some way of adding a pic somewhere from whence it can then be selected via the attachment/browse button.

I did think this was a purpose of the gallery but I guess there must be another place to add pics for the purpose of subsequent attachment to posts.

Would it be possible to have a button for adding attachment pics together with the box that appears when clicking on the attachment/browse button when posting?

Hi Mike

Hi Mike

To add photos, click the Browse button below where it says Attachments, and you should get a popup window that is largely an empty rectangular box saying "Drag files here" in the middle (see screen-shot below). This is where you upload photos, which you can do in two ways:

  1. You can drag-drop from a folder window into the empty box, and the filename(s) will appear in the box (you can add more than one file, in one or more drags).
  2. You can click the "Add files" button at the bottom left, and navigate & pick the file from the widow that appears. Again you can add multiple files.

Then click Start Upload, and wait until all the files have a green tick to the right (usually very quick).

Then click Next, and you will be able to change the name of each file (e.g. give it a meaningful name instead of a filename like P12367-G).

After clicking Save, you should be back on the main page, and you will see the files you've added listed below the text-typing area.

The Browse button is still there, allowing you to add further files, and you can Remove any if you've changed your mind or uploaded something by mistake.

I hope that helps, let me know if anything's still unclear. If maybe you don't even see the popup window as below, then it could be a technical issue with your computer.

Ah yes, mobiles! The site

Ah yes, mobiles! The site adapts quite well to mobile screens, but functions like uploading are not so easy. I get the media-browser box on my Android phone, but for some reason Add Files doesn't bring up any useful gadget for browsing files on the device. And of course you can't drag-drop on a mobile.

Mobiles seem to be built around the idea of "sharing" things, so you're supposed to e.g. view a picture, then "share" it with some other application - like a message or email. But that just doesn't work for the scenario of replying to a web page. Technology sometimes moves sideways rather than forwards. :-(

Hi John

Hi John

That's a bit strange. I assume you are clicking on Browse below the comment entry box? I.e. where it says:

Attach files to display in the post here.
Attach media
 Browse

What do you actually see when you click on Browse ?

Hi Rick,

Hi Rick,

Thanks for getting back to me, all I see is a heading Media Browser with two buttons below "Library" & "My Files"

The Library is highlighted and various photo galleries are there. If I highlight My Files there are 4 boxes headed "File Name" "Type" "Sort by" & "Order"

Underneath it says "No Files Available" and under that "Submit"

I've tried putting the file name of the file I want to upload but nothing happens.

Hope you can help,

Happy New Year,

John Pompei

Hi John

Hi John

I've discovered the problem, turns out it was a site configuration issue which may be related to a recent software update. Only users with site maintenance privileges were able to upload, which is why I didn't see the same symptom. It's now fixed, you should be able upload OK.

Just for info, the popup window has 4 tabs, the first is for upload of one or more files; the second is titled Web and allows you to load a file from a URL (e.g. a photo-sharing site, but only one at a time); the Library and My Files tabs show files that are already on the site, enabling you to re-use existing files if that's appropriate. Library shows everything, My Files just the ones you've uploaded yourself.

I know one of two other people have had issues uploading files, maybe it's all been related to the same problem. Hopefully this fixes it, and should be "plain sailing" from now!

Happy New Year to all ☺
