Hello Everybody, I am considering the purchase of a new main sail for my 1998 X. Think that the Jib & Genoa are OK. Can anyone give me some advice on what to go for? Where is the best place to buy? Many Thanks, Micheal

Hi Michael
Just purchased a a new main for a 26x from www.rollytaskersails.com will send some photos once i fit it this weekend. Ordered it with sliders etc so currently working out a way of installing a mast gate.
There is a UK distributor for Rolly Tasker if you would like her contact details ?

Hi Mike
The lady's name is Annabel really nice and helpful, i paid approx £640 for the Main, includes a thicker cut of Dacron, Sliders, Battens and reefing points. few extras added. Not bad value. My old Sail not fitted for the boat resembles a bad hankercheif no battens, BobAlong used to have a vertical furling sail on the Main, quite fancy but it broke on the previous owner, the sail i still have but unable to use nice crusader one.
I still managed to get 7 knots out of her with the old sail, just a bit of a pig to raise and lower. Just need some nice sailing weather for a test run with the new sail.
Keep you posted.
Mark.
Great work Mark. That sounds like a good price for all that. I bought knock down main from Colin winter but have had to pay for sliders and extra reefs etc.
Dreamed about fully battenned sails but decided against due to pressure on swept back spreaders.
See entries from Rick and others about creating a slider entry gate.
Hi Mark
I made a mast gate for sliders on my old 26X, and I've done the same on my current 19. I had an idea I'd posted about it, but that would have been on the old web site and I think it must have disappeared in the move. But I've found the photos, which I've attached here.
As you can see, it involves cutting a piece out of the side of the mast channel just long enough for a slider. You need a Dremel or similar tool with a mini cutting wheel. The cutout piece is attached to a strip of aluminium - preferably angle to give it some rigidity - and the strip can be removed by loosening two screws tapped into the mast.
The piece is also secured to the strip with a tapped screw. All screws must be filed down short so they don't protrude into the channel and foul the sliders.
The best way to do it is to drill and cut the strip first - you need a hole in the middle and slots at each end - then drill and tap the holes in the mast to attach it. Finally take it off and cut the removable piece out, which you can then attach to the strip. This will guarantee that it goes in perfectly aligned.
The cord is simply a safety line to avoid dropping it when inserting the sail. I also recommend tying a piece of cord through the hole in the removable piece when cutting it out. It's very likely to fly off as you finish the cut!
You can also close the expanded part of the channel used for feeding a bolt rope. All it needs is firm application of a wooden mallet. Don't be nervous, you can hit it pretty hard! This means the slugs can drop right down to the goose neck when the sail is lowered.
To work out where to position the gate, measure how much height the slugs take when all stacked together, and measure this height above the goose neck. Then make the gate an inch or two higher, this will allow you to drop all the slugs into place without having to fiddle about.
I hope this helps - have fun!

First time I lowered my main all the slugs slipped down and out of the mast and the sail ended up in the the water so I hunted around Sowenna for a quick fix and found a bungee cord which I wrapped around the mast just above the feeder slot so it acts as a jammer. A bit Blue Peter, I know, but it works.

Thanks Rick, that looks fairly neat, good idea with opening height.
how do you upload pictures to the site ?

I got a jib from Judy B at Hyde Sails Direct in the US last year and love the quality and the service. The price was very good as well!
