Re: Millford Haven

Hi Tony

The first MOA rally I went on was to Milford Haven in 2008! We used Neyland marina as a base, it's on the North side opposite the car ferry terminal. Opposite, on the South side, there is a large public slipway, it's at the end of Pier Road which is a short turn off the main road to Pembroke Dock. After launching we drove trailers round to the marina where they can offer parking space. You just need to be sure that whoever is on the boat when you launch is happy to motor across and moor up - not an arrangement for single-handing!

I'm not an expert on the area, there may be other facilities, but what we used 5 years ago worked well.

Rick

thanks for info, I had seen the marina on google earth but discounted as ddnt see a slip. I will be single handed unless I train up my partner to trailer so may have to dinghy to the car etc.

Will have a look at back issues of the mag for 2008

cheers

Re: Millford Haven

I believe last Macgregor magazine issue has an article about a trip stating at Neyland.
I seeem to think there was also another possible slip on the same side of the river but more affected by tide.

Great trip in 2008...it was my first.

yes, just read, apprently he launched from there. Neyland rang me back and said they have no storage facilities for a trialer, so if he see this, myabe clarify what he did for the trailer?

Hi Tony,

I'm the bloke that wrote the article in the Jan MOA Mag.

I've only just noticed your post.. hence the slow response.

I did indeed launch at the free slip outside Neyland yacht club. You need to get the tide right, I recovered 90 mins before HW. I think I launched at a similar time but sadly this didn't make it into my log. The current can be quite strong at other times. Also it's not very sheltered so it can get choppy depending on the weather. At low water there are a few submerged concrete blocks and the slip runs out... so I chose HW. Depending on the height of the tide at HW there is little room to manoeuvre at the top of the slip so I chose the westerly side of the slip to enable me to drive straight out without any chance of getting trapped. Once launched there is a public jetty 50 meters off that you can easily moor on whilst you sort out the car. Also try to moor on the end of the jetty, so you don't get held onto it by the current.

I parked my car and trailer at Dale Sailing. Ask for "Carl Allen" - he let me put them in a locked compound and charged £10 per week for the outfit.

We hope to be there again this July/Aug - but I think we have to be home for the A-level results :(

Hope this helps,

Daryl

Re: Millford Haven

I used to live near Milford Haven and learned to sail there. Suggest you contact the Pembrokeshire Yacht Club at Gellyswick Bay. They have/had a solid a ramp which was mostly used by dinghies in my time and a secure enclosure. It is a tidal bay though. Brilliant sailing in spite of the tankers.
Good Luck

Re: Millford Haven

We're confirmed last week in Aug for 3 weeks.

We will launch/retrieve at the public slip by the yacht club. And attempt to dump it in asap on arrival early am noting state of tide. The house we have rented has a driveway for the trailer so sorted there. Neyland marina have been pleasant to deal with so were all set. Thanks for replies.
