Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Hi Andrew,

I worked with one junior colleague in Paisley who had then just bought himself a Mac X which he had at Largs, if I remember correctly. He used to be on the forum as well. I'll pm him to see if he is still around and would like to get in touch with you. On the big American Macgregor site, there are a few Mac owners registered from Scotland. I am not sure if you are signed up on their website. If not, let me know and I post on your behalf.

Best wishes,

Immo

Hi, This is a bit late I haven't looked at the forum for months. I have a 26M and live in Lochgoilhead. Boat is out of the water now for the winter but please get in touch.

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

I am organising a trip across Scotland from Inverness to Oban starting on the Bank holiday weekend at the beginning of May, that is May 3rd. I would be keen to hear from anyone who would like to join me or from anyone who has done this trip before and can give me some advice. Thanks Jason

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Jean and I on Avocet in company with David & Cherry Robbens on Humbug did the cruise in the opposite direction in late May 2011. We had very strong or gale force south-westerly winds nearly all of the time and were very glad that we were heading north and not south both from Oban to Corpach and also on Loch Ness. For the Caledonian Canal you will need the "Skippers Guide" available from the CRT website or their office. It's fairly straightforward cruising on the canal except perhaps for the two big flights of locks at Fort Augustus and Banavie. The Lock keepers are very helpful (sometimes too much advice!) and you will be slotted in to a timetable with other boats travelling in the same direction. You need very long lines from bow and stern to the physically strongest member of your crew who will be walking the boat forward from the lock edge while the helmsperson gently motors forward from one lock to the next. Hopefully it will not be raining as heavily as it was when we were there.

if you are looking for slipways, we used the one at Caley Marina at Inverness - it's a bit dodgy with a hole at one side; assistance from tractor may be advisable. Adrian & Cathy Lockwood on Rocky Racoon had sailed in company with us from the Clyde and had to leave early, pulling their boat out on the slipway at Dunstaffnage Marina just north of Oban. It was a fairly shallow slope and Adrian wasn't impressed!

We took 4 days from Dunstaffnage to Inverness with overnight stops at Banavie top lock, Laggan pontoon, and Fort Augustus bottom lock, also several daytime stops as well. Plenty of moorings with good facilities. By pushing on, you might be able to do it in 3 long days.

Great fun (Jean says "super-duper") - you will enjoy it. Don't hesitate to ask for any further info.

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Thank you Bill that is very helpful. Yes it would seem more sensible to go west to east, but I want to finish in Oban with the possibility of then doing some more sailing from Oban around the west coast. I might be in touch for more advice, regards Jason

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Hello Jason
I'm a Scottish member based in Aberdeenshire. I have been away for a while this winter and last summer my 'Rahui' did not get out of the shed!. This summer I am hoping to base myself in the Clyde again but will not be available yet in the beginning of May. I also want to find out what else is on the MacGregor calendar within reach first before making any plans. Keep in touch though as I also would like to explore a little further north this summer. Regards, Anneke

Hi Andrew
My wife Gail and I have just purchased an M and live in Galloway. Is there a Scottish list of Members that you know of? John

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Hi John

You can download the full membership list from the forum. From the Board Index page go to Important Stuff, and there's a topic there "Membership List".

The list includes addresses, email, phone numbers, and boat type. In case you're wondering about confidentiality, the topics in that section of the site are only accessible if you are logged into the forum, which restricts it to club members.

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Hi, john and Gail , the only members in Scotland I know of , are the ones that have replied to my request. I have seen a couple of macgregors sitting on the hard standing at Largs , and I asked about the owners when I was there , and left my phone number, but no one got back to me . When did you get your boat , have you been out on it this season ?

Re: MEMBERS IN SCOTLAND

Various events have conspired to prevent me getting on the water this summer. (See the next MacGregor Sailor for some details.) I have sailed my 26M on the Forth, lauching at Port Edgar. I had my 'official launch' on the Union Canal at Broxburn, but my favourite sailing area is Loch Lomond.

The reasons for favouring Loch Lomond is the fantastic slip at Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway. The car tyres are barely wet when the boat floats off the trailer. The loch is around 20 miles long (and over 1000 ft deep in places) so there is a lot of area to sail. Numerous sheltered bays and several pontoons to tie-up or anchor for the night if you want to spend a few days there.

Best of all, as it's fresh water, you don't have to flush everything to rid it of salt water.
