surely the more you egg your nuts the harder they are to screw? I prefer them well greased for practicality. If the locking rim is getting a little flacid I think I would reach for a dose locktight. At a pinch one could peen the ends a little when on?

What it really comes down to I suppose, is that that your nuts should get a regular seeing too, and the drums should be removed a couple of times a year to see what is happening inside. ;)

It all probably depends on how often you put the trailer in the water and whether that water is salty or not. After 7 years and with more than a dozen or so immersions (mixed fresh & salty) annually I have found that the brake linings have separated from the shoes and so the brake assemblies have to be replaced every three years.

Wheel bearings (mine are Knott Avonride which I would not particularly recommend) need to be carefully monitored by jacking up and spinning the wheel to check for noise and wobble two or three times a season - depending on how many miles travelled. Bearing failure on the road can lead to a damaged axle which may be impossible to repair.

Heeding the danger of being repetitive: SALT AND STEEL DON'T MIX!
After trailing and BEFORE launching ensure that there is plenty of downtime for the bearings/hubs to cool down. If you launch with the hubs still warm the cooling effect of the water will create a vacuum and suck water into the hub with ultimately disastrous results! Plenty of time to step the mast, fit the sails etc. (and have a cup of tea!) before launching. I always carry a small grease gun with the trailer gear and make sure that the wheel bearings are amply supplied with grease just prior to launching. So far the last time I had any bearing trouble was 1981 (with a 'new' trailer I had purchased for the boat I had at the time). Don't forget the damaging effect of UV rays on your tyres - cover them up when the trailer is parked. Make sure that all tyre pressures (INC. spare) are correctly maintained.
