26x sprayhood

Who wants one of these? perhaps with the capability of adding more tent stuff on at a later date? sounds good yes, no more british wind biting your bones, less of the briney in your face, less talk of divorce from the beloved?

Well I do, though not quite as much as Mrs Mandy. If something doesn't happen soon I'm going to be looking at some weighty bills.. about £650 seems to be the current favourite, and that represents a few weeks sailing budget. It is a malicious rumour that says I walk with a squeak...
Sooo, having just upholstered a new suite for the spare room, I'm thinking about making one (or more) as I'm not a bad seamstress. Now I reckon the materials are not going to be much above £100, and I have no fear sorting out stainless rods. So my cheapskate thoughts are running along the lines of 'lets get a few like minded folk together and see what we can do over these off season months'
One thing I really need is a sprayhood to copy a pattern from. Perhaps between our international community someone 'in on the project' may be able to purloin one for a short period and sneak it to poole so I can make my patterns and calculations... and if I'm making one, it is alot easier to make a few whilst I'm at it... So what's init for fellow co-conspiritors? A sprayhood at probly less than half price. Any that have seen the mods on Restless will also know that I have a tendency to well over engineer everything.
Anyway, I'll put this out and see how things develop as I contemplate the 40 days and 40 nights of rain going on. I feel extra reassured that I have a boat on the drive :-)

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice; In practice, there is.

hi Bjorn,i would be interested in procuring one as well, over engineered and stainless fittings sounds very interesting,as long as the cost was reasonable otherwise i could be in the divorce court with you
best wishes will

Re: 26x sprayhood

Hi Will
btw, thanks for the charts, they arrived... trust the red steering stuff has arrived by now!?
I'll have a much more accurate costing when I know I can get on with it. I have already found a source for material, and stainless is not too hard. Dunno yet about things like deck poppers etc, the really nice ones are £3.50 a go! There are cheaper alternatives. Anyway, I'll look into this when I know there's a pattern coming my way.
So our motley crew is up to two already!

Re: 26x sprayhood

I have a sprayhood, and it is certainly good for protection against foul weather. It does have one great disadvantage, which is that it doesn't allow you to gain access from the cockpit to the coach roof. The places where you might place your feet are occupied by tight-stretched canvas. Mine is the standard version made by C & J Marine, and it is quite common among mac owners, so you might find that the pattern you copy is one of those.
By comparison, Bill Millar's sprayhood is narrow, affording perhaps a little less protection but allow you to get past it.
I have felt that the ideal would the C & J type could be improved by sculpting pockets into it that allow a place for feet without allowing water in.
Would you like your ideas to be included in the magazine?

Hi John
Hows winter for you? Good to hear from you again.
This is just the sort of thing I want to hear about... detailed improvements. I'm thinking of velcro pop outs now..
By all means include it in the mag. The more that get together on this the better for all! Let me know if you want me to expand/shrink the post to an article.
Cheers
:-)

Hi Bjorn
"and if I'm making one, it is alot easier to make a few whilst I'm at
it..."
-> Yop...

"So what's init for fellow co-conspiritors?"
-> Count me in! A sprayhood is high on mi wish list... ;)

"A sprayhood at probly
less than half price."
->OH YES!!!

"Any that have seen the mods on Restless will also
know that I have a tendency to well over engineer everything."
-> Can I "order one?"

Cheers
Jose

PS: This sunday I sailed for the last time this year (sunny but could) and later I I removed the sails from "Ariane".
Next weekend I am trailering it home.
And I will look at my BIG list of mods...
March it will go back to the water :)

Re: 26x sprayhood

Hi Jose
Can't believe you don't have one of these already..
BTW I want to make some new rudders like your go-faster ones. A quick mold making session then I can make some with unbreakable stainless tube insets and leading ssteel guards and proper bearings on the swing pins etc etc...
I've always thought a zip in perspex window would be alot clearer than plastic (I had on old soft top car as a student...) for the main view. Thoughts?

Re: 26x sprayhood

Hi Bjorn
Catching up with the forums, haven't been here a while ...
This is a very interesting idea, I'd definitely like to get a sprayhood at a good price, so consider me a potential "customer"!
Following comments above, easy access to the coachroof is a must. Ideally it should also fold flat quickly and easily, and the same for complete removal.
I know what you're getting at with a perspex window, but wouldn't it be too rigid? How about folding the hood down without taking the window out?
Keep me posted when you've worked out more details, I'm sure you'll come up with something clever!
Cheers.

Hi Bjorn, I also am considering a spray hood, having done one season without one and am very interested about the other members comments about access and vision, please let me know how things progress, regards Roh Hall ,DoRon.

Re: 26x sprayhood

And the consortium grows!
Access is important for sure. To those I've spoken to the hoods don't seem to be as much as a problem as one might expect, though I am totaly in accord with something that can be collapsed in one quick easy move, or maybe a semi-fixed center panel with QD (quick detatch) sides. I think I like the idea of that, means a perspex pane could be used too which is good... As far as maintenance and putting up/taking off etc is concerned I'll do something based on very practical priciples. I hate fiddling with bad engineering, especially with cold fingers!
Ok, just had a look.

So if the red is stainless fitted to the companion way ally rail, (qds) and the blue our perspex sheet... we have a damn good start already. Attach flappy sides and it could be a highly elegant solution to a tricky problem. If built solidly enough one could even have a main sheet track...... No! I'm not going there... yet...
Ok, anyone got any reasons that this would not work? Don't worry about aesthetics, it will look lovely however it is made.
Looking forward to hearing. I'm looking forward to this...
