Hello mac owners, winter is pretty boring! so thought i would try and turn wasted time into productive time by generating some activity on the mac forum.(the American site says we dont use forums)My yamaha 50 betdl has a trim tab gauge but i dont know what setting it should show? i know that in theory when motoring when up on the plane you back off the tilt untill the bow comes down a bit but stays on the plane,or do you set up using the trim gauge thingy?
also is it worth trying to plane when the ballast tanks are full?
my 26x just seems to lift the bow and not really plane,is this becaus she is too heavy(with the water ballst and too many tins of grub etc)
opinions would be well recieved
best wishes will

trim tabs and planing

A Mac only planes on empty ballast
Maybe if you have a 70hp ?

Will,
planing with the ballast tank full was possible on hullaballo (99-26X) and ocurred at 7-9 klts but was horrendous on fuel useage, so I only ever motored at displacement speeds with full ballast.
However with an empty ballast tank she would plane at around 7-8kts and go on to achieve at WOT, a speed of around 14-16kts depending on tide, current and wind speed/direction and number of people on board!
I also had a Yamaha 50 betl OB and I assume you are referring to the engine tilt gauge which I normally just left at mid point , there should no need to adjust the tilt once you have set it for how the boat is loaded fore and aft.
To determine this setting, put her up on a plane (no ballast) with trim at mid point. When the speed has settled down to a constant reading, try tilting the engine up and down and note the speed changes. Then set the trim (+ or - the mid point) to the fastest speed, this can then be left unless you move any heavy stuff around which will change how the boat sits in the water.
To be honest I played around with the engine tilt angle many times but found the speed difference achieved was only around 1kt, so I just left it set at the mid point.

Thanx Morris, cant wait to try it out!march still seems a long way
