Advice on upgrading MacGregor 26M steering wheel size (and EV100 compatibility)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to upgrade the stock 15” steering wheel on my 26M to an 18” or 20” wheel, as the current one feels a bit too small.

My stock wheel uses a ¾” tapered shaft with roughly a 10-degree dish/tilt. I’m having trouble sourcing an 18” or 20” dished wheel here in the UK—almost everything available seems to be flat.

I’m also planning to install a Raymarine EV-100 wheel pilot. Does anyone know if using a flat wheel instead of a dished/tilted one causes any clearance or operational issues with the EV-100 drive unit?

Any advice or UK supplier recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

On my M  I used one from

On my M I used one from Vetus , which is based in Fareham . It managed the wheel pilot fine and had a comfortable rubber rim.

Many thanks Roly, much

Many thanks Roly, much appreciated. Love the PU foam option for comfort and no more cold hands! Compairing yours (seen on your mods) and from their website they have 2 versions a 21" or 17" with PU foam on the spokes like yours, and there is a slight dish/tilt. What size did you get Roly?

Hi Steven, I have Aranah and the vetus wheel measures 20 inches. I have taken a picture, however the attach function on the web page is not allowing me to attach anything?? if you would like a photo or a chat about the set up with autohelm give me a call. Tel 07734902995 Regards Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for reaching

Hi Mark, thanks for reaching out. I checked with Vitesse Marine Ltd in Fareham and they quoted £270 but out of stock and need to order from Holland. There was no indication of the dish-tilt and they said there is a very slight tilt but less than compared with a Mahogany one. I ended up buying a Marpac 7-0684 (same as the 74120) 20" 10 deg tilt from BGA Marine USA as advised by a few 26M owners with an EV100 autopilot from Facebook groups. Cost was £93 including shipping :-)

Hi Steven,

Hi Steven,

I’ve got a brand new Raymarine EV-100 Wheel Pilot with Wheel Drive and p70s control (still boxed), plus an Osculati stainless helm wheel.

I bought it for our 26M, but we’ve since inherited a cruiser, so it’s unlikely to get fitted any time soon. The wheel is larger than the original, although I’ll need to measure it to confirm the diameter.

My plan was to potentially fit a wheel wrap to the Osculati, as the more expensive wheels didn’t seem to offer much extra comfort.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you’re interested.

Cheers,
Thor

Thanks for the offer Thor but

Thanks for the offer Thor but my new Marpus 20" wheel is on the way. I'd prefer a new EV100 as it will be under warranty.

Hi Steven,

Hi Steven,

Of course. No problem at all. Are you doing the installation yourself? It would be great to learn from your experience, so keep us posted on how it goes.

Cheers,
Thor

Saw this and it does look dooable for DIY. Maybe a winter project.
