Wondering if anyone has a Mac 26X or M Sat on a 5ft width trailer (between rails).
I was wandering around a yard at the weekend looking at various trailers ( some of which for sale) and they were all 5ft width rail to rail.
My original Mac 2005 steel trailer is 5ft 10 rail to rail.
I reckon I could cut and shut the bearers to make a 5ft one work (as from my look at about 10 trailers it seems to be commonplace) just wondering if anyone has done it...?
cheers,
Matt

You need to be able to provide a certificate to prove to your insurance company that the trailer is to the approved standard if you are involved in an incident
You will certainly need the Cert if you travel abroad.
Also be very aware of the weight of the trailer and consider your tow vehicles capacity.
Strongly suggest you look into the regulations before committing any money & make sure the trailer has the spec plate visible on the front A frame
Thanks Keith. I tow with a Range Rover (3500kg) only considering trailers plated at 2600kg and above.
I know there is a load of useful things you and others have added to the sections of this site on towing - so thanks for that
Towed loads of stuff, but never even heard of a certificate before.... never been abroad with a trailer tho.
Assuming all of the above as you have suggested, I am more concerned at the 'will it fit?'.
Having just been to check my boat the 5inch lost each side would see the hull just touching the fenders assuming it is supported at the same height above the axles.

Just before lockdown we decided the original (2001) trailer was nearing the end of it's life and we spoke to lots of trailer manufacturers. Our criteria were: It had to have twin axles, it had to have cross members to allow us to remove the cerntreboard while on the trailer, it had to have "goalposts" to help guide the boat on recovery and it had to have a ladder at the front. In the end we came back to Mersea who came up with a new bespoke design and we had the first one. It cost £2330 in 2019. They also took the old trailer back in part exchange.
As noted on other forums the owner is a little difficult to deal with but I have to say the product is superb.
