I finally took Jaquinot out this week
First time this year. The echo sounder on the instrument panel is working but nothing else. No idea how many knots I'm doing. It just shows zero. And the trip button does nothing nor does the other one (forget what that was) I think the make is a Clipper.
Anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks
Rob

Might just be the paddle wheel gunked up. The magnets fell out of mine so it's completely shot. Replacements are available if this is the case with yours. If you're brave or dried out you can whip it out for a look or maybe reach under the hull with a broom to see if you can brush away a cloggage.
Or it might be something completely different!
Where abouts is it?
Hi Robert
The paddle wheel is either mounted on the transom, or is a through-hull fitting somewhere under the floor.
The first case is simpler, it's obvious what it is, and easy to clean and check.
If the latter then it may be a case of following wiring to locate it. The sensor should be removable from the inside, but not when afloat!

I managed to locate the paddle wheel and confirm its moving freely. Still no knots showing as I move along ??
What now ?
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Rob,
I had a paddle wheel log on a previous boat and the magnet(s) had fallen out of the paddle wheel. They are perhaps glued in position or maybe moulded in to the paddle wheel but eventually, they fall out. The paddle wheel just popped out on mine with little effort and a new one bought from ebay or similar popped in. The problem sorted. Easy if you have access underneath your boat, harder if it is underwater.

I had a clipper log on a previous boat. The transducer had a through hull fitting you could unscrew the transducer and pull it out and quickly put the palm of your hand over the tube to stop the water rushing in. I purchased a screw on cap made by instrument supplier to seal exposed tube which was about 1 foot below the water line. The first time I removed the transducer I was quite alarmed by the water pressure and the amount of water that gushed in, I did this operation just as the boat keel settled on the bottom as the tide was going out. just in case I swamped the boat. After a little practice you can remove the transducer and fit the sealing cap with only a couple of gallons of sea water added to the bilges. One year when I checked the transducer I found that the magnet had fallen off. I purchased a new transducer and connected it to instrument panel, by blowing on the paddle wheel you can rotate the wheel at quite a speed sufficient to get a reading on the instrument panel. When I purchased the boat the previous owner said that he had never seen the log work. After I changed the transducer it did work for about 5 or 10 minutes but then became clogged up by a bit of weed, on a drying mooring barnacles always grew on the paddle wheel or mud clogged it up, so when I returned to the boat it never worked. When sailing the transducer mounted in the bow came out of the water so even if the paddle wheel went around it would be unlikely to give an accurate result. As the previous boat owner said "I use a Garmin GPS to determine the boat speed and direction".
