It can take some brute force!

It can take some brute force! It is simply a taper fit with a Woodruff key, but a puller sometimes needs a bit of help.

Heat (i.e. blowtorch) can help, but can be tricky not to set fire to things in that situation.

Some sharp blows with a heavy hammer on the end of the puller often works - the impact should be directly in line with the shaft. With the puller tightened as far as it will go at the same time, this has a good chance of dislodging it.

Now that I can be sure that

Now that I can be sure that it is just a taper. Thanks I will try heat as well ( first puller slipped to side and shaft broke so have ordered a more robust model)

Try penetrating oil,

Try penetrating oil, basically paraffin or WD40 just drip it into joint between shaft and wheel a few sharp taps with a hammer help. too hard an impact with a hammer may break the alloy cast steering box. When I removed my wheel it took about 3 days to dribble in penetrating oil. For the first few days the wheel would not move but on the third day it came off easily with a puller. When you reassemble the wheel clean with abrasive paper and apply lots of petroleum jelly to the mating surfaces to prevent corrosion between mating parts.

I have had to remove my steering wheel several times and twice in a hurry due to wheel pilot jamming. The first time I used a metal bar braced against the wheel and tensioned against the spokes by 2 g clamps. Then a slight tap on the centre released the wheel . Subsequently I found a Rolson 3 piece bearing puller set and keep them on the boat. The large one works a treat .

Don't miss the small metal quadrant piece that can drop out when you pull off the wheel. It's essential for fixing it back.

FYI, the technical term for the "small metal quadrant piece" is a "Woodruff key". They are made in standard sizes, so in the worst case, if you lose it you can get a replacement from an engineering supplier.

Hi Roly

Hi Roly

Is Rick trying to demean the Secretary by implying that your technical knowledge is below par !!

Im sure you can outdo him with some Latin
