Rigging

My rigging is very loose when compared on the “Big Mac” to others. Has anyone got any tips hints or whatever on how to tighten and set rigging? I’m sure I remember somebody telling me a long time ago that there is a tool available that will draw the ladder plates together whilst you put a pin in. I believe also that there is a tork setting from what I can tell from the Internet, to which the Rigging should be set. Any ideas what that value is and where this mysterious tool is? searches on the Internet have revealed nothing so far.

On my list of things to do I intend to instal a pulley on the Jackstay but that won’t solve the shrouds issue which I’m most concerned with since the forestay can be tightened up with the bottle screw. Also has anyone fitted bottle screws to the shrouds instead of the ladder plates since from what I can tell on the Internet, most yachts have that configuration?

Hi, Rod,

Hi, Rod,

Do you mean a 'shroud tension Gauge'? Around £100.00 from most chandlers but bargains pop up from time to time.

I am happy with the plate system and use the mast raising winch when adjusting my shrouds. I use the old fashioned method of pinging them with my hand to see if both sides are equally taught. I used this method when rigging dinghies and can just reach both shrouds when standing on deck so I am happy with my system. My arms are not as scientific as a gauge though but can tell if tension is equal and the twang should be roughly the same from ech shroud.

There are several articles in PBO which is available on-line and on the web and I always liked this bit of sage advice "loosen the forestay on the shore, move the shrouds to the
right hole on the "thingumies" then retension the forestay"

Best to do it ashore as you can get the mast vertical.
