Stuck in the mud

While on my shakedown cruise at the Walton backwaters, I was coming in around where the barges are, must have hit something, and lost most of my ability to steer. It looks like the steering rod and brackets are what is bent.

So, Here I sit catch it out and waiting for the tide to return so the LIfeboat can come and told me in to the marina. I was actually quite fortunate because if this would’ve happened anywhere else I would not be sitting on this nice soft mud.

Anyone want to offer good repair suggestions before the engineers take a look at it?

if you go to the website

if you go to the website section on the forums, there are a set of drawings of parts that may need to be repaired if you have done more than bend. You can also get the dimensions for th items when they have been straightened.

good luck

Hi Tim

Hi Tim

FYI (and everyone else's), your set of drawings are now under the Knowledge Base, in the reference section.

They are much appreciated. I had a lot on when I uploaded them, so apologies if I didn't acknowledge your contribution at the time.

Hi David. I once had steering

Hi David. I once had steering fail as I manoeuvred in Huat Harbour 8 miles off coast of Brittany. The bracket fixing the steering cable to the interior of the boat had sheared off . I had to crimp it together with a large jubilee clip and also used a broomstick shackled to steering bracket of my outboard in order to get myself home.

I hope you get it fixed soon.

Thanks to Roly and Tim,

Thanks to Roly and Tim,

I am moored up Safe and sound at the marina. To add insult to injury I think I shared my steering cable as well.

Hopefully,An engineer will be available to have a look at it in the morning. I hope we can find a way to get it recovered on the trailer as well.

I need help please. Here are

I need help please. Here are the basic details.

2006 26M with standard steering gear. Coming in to the creek I wanted to beach on, my steering partially froze. I had limited starboard ans no port rudder. In the losing battle against the lee shore, something broke, resulting in the wheel simply spinning. I am out for the next couple of weeks, so this is in the hands of some good engineers at Titchmarsh who, unfortunately, don’t know this system.

Do we have anybody way smarter than me who can offer tips on what went wrong and how to repair it? I am not spending the 1000 pounds for a hydraulic system.

Any knowledgeable response would be very welcome!

Hi David.  You said starring

Hi David. You said starring bars were bent....is that true or do you think maybe it was the normal bend. Have you checked inside the boat at the back where the steering cable is fixed to the boat by an L shaped bracket that is fixed to a bolt that goes through the grp ? It sounds suspiciously like what I had. Maybe send me or post some photos. Find my contact on the members list. I'm happy to talk this weekend.

Roly,

Roly,

Thanks for the kind offer. I did not think to take any photos. I am considering buying the upgrade kit from Blue Water Yachts. I will try to talk to them this weekend. I fear that I might have unbent the steering rod in trying to free the rudders. I have to be gone to the states for the next 3 weeks so I will be very fortunate to get any needed parts to my engineer at Titchmarsh in time for the rally.

I am so sorry, David.

I am so sorry, David. Something you didn't need, now or ever.

Assuming Logan's Run won't make the rally, you might think of driving down yourself for some of the event and crewing with someone.

Do let me know.

I am not a DIY fiend and if the local steel fabricators can't make something up for you, I too would go to Blue Water Yachts for replacement.

I do wonder how many spares they have left and how long they will last.

On my shakedown, had a great sail down the estuary with the tide and all was well until we turned about and started the engine only to find no water spout so cancelled evening appointments, sailed back against the tide and just used the motor for the final entrance to the marina. I had phoned the local marine engineer who was waiting on the pontoon with a paper clip and freed the blockage. O me miserum!

Nice ending! I am going to

Nice ending! I am going to give my engineer a chance before I throw in the towel. I would love to come as crew if my boat is still out of order.
