I have a Mariner 8 all connected up to the controls in the cockpit. The throttle and forward are ok but no reverse. The problem seems to be in the cockpit controls. Anyone else had this problem?
The best first step is to see what the cables are doing at the engine end. Take off the engine cover and check the two control cables as you move the lever. The throttle cable should move progressively in the same direction, whether you push the control forward or backward. The gear shift should move a short distance one direction when you engage forward, and a short way the other when you engage reverse.
If the shift cable is moving correctly, then the problem is in the engine, if not then it's at the control. It might just be a case of the cable not being anchored and/or aligned correctly (at either end), which should be easily rectified.

As ever, you have been very helpful. The rods had been connected by marina staff. We took them off and reconnected them whilst it was all set up for reverse and it worked. I am just about to try and download a manual for the outboard as there is palstic clip to hold the cables in position and it isn't too obvious how it works.
