Keeping up to date with the forums

Here are some ways to help ensure you keep up to date with postings in the forum.

You'll be well aware that the site sends out an email every time there is a new post in the forum, However, that's not the only way to find out what's going on, and you may find some of the alternatives more convenient. Also, because of the volume of emails that are sent out we can't guarantee that you will actually receive an email for every single post (sometimes they get lost or rejected) - so if you rely totally on the emails you may miss some things!

New & updated topics

The site keeps track of which posts you've viewed, and can tell you everything you haven't yet looked at. This feature depends on you being logged in (otherwise it doesn't know who you are). When you are logged in there is a link in the Navigation menu New & updated topics. There is also a tab with the same title when you are on the main Forums page. These will show you a page that lists all the topics with posts you haven't yet viewed, most recent at the top.

Using this list, you can view the whole topic by clicking on its title at the left, or if it has replies it will say View 5 new for example. Clicking on this will take you directly to the earliest reply that you haven't read.

You can open the New & updated topics page from e.g. a bookmark by using this link:
http://macgregorowners.org.uk/drupal/forum/new. If you're not logged in you will be prompted to do so.

Note: if you've been reading the forum without logging in (just using the email links for example), then first time you use this it will show everything as unread! You can fix this by going to the main Forums page, and at the bottom right is a drop-down labeled Forum Tools. Click on this and pick Mark all forums read, which will clear the list.

Managing the emails

You may want to reduce the number and/or frequency of emails. You have control over this by using the Subscription feature. Click on My Account in the User menu, then on the Subscriptions tab. Here you can do the following:

  • Change what you are actually subscribed to by clicking on each of the subscription types and then using the check-boxes. If you don't want any notifications at all just turn everything off.
  • Use Delivery of notifications to temporarily suspend emails. (Don't use this if you want to permanently turn them off because when you turn delivery back on you will receive all the suspended emails at once.)
  • Click on Settings, where the most useful options are Digest mode and Send interval. With these you can combine all the notifications into a single email, with no more than one email each interval (the longest period you can set is daily).

It's great to see so much active discussion amongst our members, I hope these notes enable you to follow what's being said in a way most convenient to you.
