Last question for the weekend; promise!
Having tried to start the outboard today and discovering I had no fuel I made the further discovery that the fuel filler cap vents foul the cockpit seat so it can't close properly.
Naturally if you sit on it it closes the vent which presumably would eventually stop the motor.
I've googled this and it's a known issue but the only solution, that doesn't involve cutting into the boat, is to find a lower profile fuel filler cap - the one with the tank is super high.
Problem is I can't find any filler caps anywhere let alone smaller ones.
Any ideas that don't involve 4 x 6 gallon tanks?

How big are your fuel tanks? i have 2 x 25 litre but if you can get bigger ones under then i'd be interested to hear - even if i hae to be selective on the type of filler cap

I'm not entirely clear how this problem happens, any chance of a photo?
My only thought might be to add an additional vent to the tank and use this instead of the one in the cap
or a guard ring around the cap so the vent doesn't get pressed down?

Thanks Guys.

I could easily buy smaller tanks to replace my two but we are only talking about a few millimeters so I'm looking to solve it with the ones I have.
A lower profile fuel cap would do it. Anyone know where I could get one.
Alternatively I could shave/cut into the GRP slightly in appropriate points.

We use 2 x 25 liter Yamaha fuel tanks on our 26M with our 50hp Yamaha and have no problem with the vents - a third 25 liter tank can be carried for long distances. It looks like you are having a problem with the US 12 gallon tank = 45 liters which is big and heavy to manage compared to 2 x 25 liter tanks. I personally don't normally use a lot of fuel at a time so I take a 5 liter can every time we go out and top up the tank in use so we don't have to manhandle a 25 litre tank on and off unless we are going away and think we will need lots of fuel.
When we leave teh boat we just screw the vent down then back it off half a turn so the tank doesn't inflate in the heat or get sucked in when its cold. Just need to remember to open the vent when we go out as its kind of inconvenient when the motor stops half way out of the marina in a narrow channel shared with other vessels!

Thanks guys, as I'm planning my first launch on the next spring here in Falmouth on 21 July I've gone for a simple fix - bearing in mind I need to sort out my bow cleats and solar installation too without stealing too much family time.
I've ordered a 6 gallon Moeller tank, same make so the fittings should be ok.
I will keep one of the 12 gallon tanks as it seems to fit slightly better?? and I can always use this as a reserve and top up the 6 gallon tank from it without having to have the vent open.

Hi Mike. Ill be in the Falmouth area this weekend. I'll look out for you. I'm in 'Proteus' a 26x. I'll be sailing with a bright red Achillies 24 called 'Thetis'. Maybe see you on the water. J
Hi James,
Thanks, planning to get her on the water at HW; around 7pm. I'll aim to be on my mooring around 8pm.
At that stage I'll know a lot of answers; eg does the ob start, do the strops fit on the cleats ok etc.
If you're on the water after 8pm please give me buzz; we could moor up at the Pandora for a pint.
Just got a few jobs to do before HW.
It's my first time so it's very exciting.
Have a great day!
