I have experienced a most embarrassing problem when manoeuvring in confined marina areas using the outboard - when turning the wheel from lock to lock a piercing metallic noise occurs. It would appear to originate from the steering tube connecting the outboard to the steering system where it passes through the outboard well wall. It does not occur during normal sailing procedures. My first inclination is that the steering tube is fouling the edge of the hole in the outboard well, but there does not appear to be any tell-tale signs. Since my enforced lay up I have tried to reproduce the conditions on dry land, but to no avail. Question: Has any other member experienced this, and how was it resolved? I am inclined to make the hole in the outboard well larger to give more clearance to the outboard steering tube. The problem of egress of water could be solved by fitting a rubber gaiter around the tube.
