I've just come across a product I wasn't aware of, though it seems it's been around for 18 months or so. It's called Trailair, made by Landrover.
It provides continuous tyre pressure and temperature monitoring for all the vehicle and trailer tyres, and as a bonus has a reversing camera explicitly designed for backing up to the tow hitch unassisted. There are various kits to fit specific Landrover models, and a universal kit for other cars.
It looks very neat, see the website at http://www.landrovertrailair.co.uk/. Not cheap, price is around £600, and I don't know how easy a DIY job the installation would be, so there might be additional fitting costs. However, given how troublesome trailer wheels can be, especially with our heavy loads, if it prevents a blowout it could well repay itself.
I wondered if any members had come across this, and/or have any opinions or experience of it. Has anyone got it fitted to their car?
Any additional information welcome!
