Caution - emoticons!

There was a flurry of errors on the web server today, which resulted from an attempt to post a message with emoticons (or do you prefer "emoji"?!) in it. (Roly - see below)

Unfortunately, our site can't cope with these, and just throws a fit. The digital codes for emoticons have only been relatively recently agreed by the industry, and although they've been rapidly taken up by all things mobile, the world of web site hosting is slower to adapt, and our server thinks they're invalid characters.

So please, if posting from a phone or tablet, remember that the section of the keyboard with all the funny faces is off-limits!

Roly - i guess you got a load of errors and gave up. However, the errors i received included the text you were trying to post, so I've posted it for you (sans emoji), attributed to your login.

Good news, I've recently

Good news, I've recently updated the database configuration to support emoji. So feel free to post those pesky little faces if the mood takes you!

But how do we access them? Unlike many other forums etc. they don't appear anywhere I can find.
They are kind of important otherwise there is a danger of people taking what I say seriously!

There's no tools on the web

There's no tools on the web site itself, but if you use a smartphone or tablet you can enter them directly from the keyboard. I haven't tried finding tools to enter them on desktop operating systems, but surely it's supported in the latest versions?
