Vang installation

I don't have a vang/kicker on my boat but I do seem to have all the necessary bits and bobs APART from the thingy that bolts onto the boom.

Indeed there are already holes in the boom just waiting for it.

Any idea what's it's called and where to get it? I'm guessing it's a bit like the one on the mast for attaching the mast raising line.

Many thanks!

Iwould call it a large D

Iwould call it a large D shackle . Not totally essential but tight vang can improve sail performance on some reaches.

Thanks Roly, I've now saved

Thanks Roly, I've now saved the details from the BW Yachts site so will take them to my friendly local chandler...can't see anything suitable online in the UK.

I'm guessing that, by the end of the season, I may well have a sufficient size list to warrant a BWY order.

Hi Mike

Hi Mike

I think I may have a spare one of those big U shackles, I'll need to rummage! I'm at Poole with other Macs this week, I'll have to let you know for certain later.

Thanks Rick, that would be

Thanks Rick, that would be great, no hurry.

Have fun at Poole, best wishes to all there. Studland used to be one of our favourite day trips before we moved to Cornwall.

I tried a quick motor around the Carrick Roads this morning, my first venture!

Now back on the mooring trying to fit the Main.

I've got it tied and covered ready for action BUT when I had a trial hoist I couldn't get it all the way to the top - even cleating it and levering the halyard (can't remember what that's called:))

Any clues??

Ps just sitting in the saloon listening to the water etc, so cool - dream come true.

Big thanks to all who've helped!!

hi Mike,

hi Mike,

could do with some photos from the top to bottom of the mast showing the detail of how it's rigged.

I love Falmouth. Reminded me of year before last, before I bought Henriette, chartered a Sadler 26 from Cornish Cruising and got the in-mast furling main sail stuck up and had a hairy time mooring at the Pandora Inn jetty. Once moored, got it down and had a nice meal and a pleasant night, reasonably level, 'dried' on the bilge keel.

regards

Colin

Hi Colin, not at the boat now

Hi Colin, not at the boat now so no pics but I had a good look and there's no apparent obstruction; will take my binoculars next visit.

The Pandora is wonderful, we holidayed for 10 years here before retiring and moving here. So looking forward to mooring the Mac at the Pandy (as we call it)

I did my Day Skipper with Cornish Cruising, Tim was a great trainer. We had in-mast furling on our Bavaria 38 so didn't get to grips with standard reefing.

So looking forward to my first real sail in the Mac

Starting with the obvious,

Starting with the obvious, Mike, is the Halyard running free or is it twisted. Sometimes it is difficult to spot in sunlight. Then do you have plastic lugs to slot into a groove in the mast? If there is only one of you it can be a fiddly job, slotting in the lugs and hauling the sail up at the same time. It just takes one lug to twist a bit and the whole thing jams.

Once all my lugs are safely slotted in the groove, I fix a bungee cord around the mast just below the bottom lug to stop them all falling down if you let go of the halyard.

It helps to have a second pair of hands and eyes.

Good Luck

Simon

Many thanks Simon, I'm pretty

Many thanks Simon, I'm pretty sure the halyard was ok but I'll be looking more carefully next time as I'll be planning to use the sail rather that just fitting it, which was the plan for today.

No lugs, all in-sail rope.

I guess there could be damage to the track at the top.

If it doesn't shift next time I'll get the mast down and look; I've wanted to tighten the rigging slightly anyway.

Yes track can get damaged on

Yes track can get damaged on mast support so worth checking.

Also make sure that main sheet is released and physically lift the boom to take weight off sail.I find that makes it much easier.I have my halyard led back to cockpit around a pulley so that is easy for me.
