Hi folks. Does anyone have a combined motor/rudder steering arrangement that they're happy with and would they be willing to explain/photograph the set-up? Mine is 'OK' but becomes stiff when the engine is raised because the tipped engine creates a steep angle for the steering ram to travel. Not having sailed her yet (only cruising) I'm a little concerned about this.

Hi James
I know the problem, and I made a mod to my X which I found worked pretty well (I no longer have the boat, so can't take any pics!). I changed the pivot where the motor steering bar joins the starboard rudder so that the motor bar could be lifted off.
This involved replacing the pivot bolt with a longer one, and just dropping the motor bar over it. If you use, say, a 10cm bolt there's little chance of the bar jumping off accidentally. I also drilled an extra hole in the plate on the end of the motor bar and fitted a long-shank eye bolt to create a handle so I could easily reach over the stern seat to lift it on and off.
When I first did it I was able to fix a parking point, i.e. another fixed bolt that I could drop the motor bar onto. Positioning this is tricky so it doesn't obstruct any of the steering, and also allows the motor to be fully tilted. I later changed the outboard, and the geometry of the new one was subtly different and I found a parking point was impossible. The system was still workable though, because I could just unhook the motor and let it fall to one side as i raised it - so parking wasn't necessary anyway.
Hope that helps!
