Can anyone tell me if they have moved their Tohatsu remote control lever position and whether it is possible? My control unit is mounted pointing upwards with the throttle/gear lever pointing aft. Can the lever be rotated 90 degrees clockwise so the the handle is vertical in the neutral position? I have to 'lift' the handle to select forward gear and it seems unnatural. To push it forward for forwards and backwards to select reverse would be much more comfortable and not as close to the steering wheel. I don't however want to take it to bits if there are going to be springs and wires everywhere!

Tohatsu remote controls

Hi James
I agree it's a bit uncomfortable in the way it's positioned, but there's not much alternative. The standard remote unit is designed to be mounted with the cables exiting to aft, which is the natural arrangement in a typical open-hull small boat. In the X the cables have to come up through the cockpit floor which means the controller has to be at that angle. I've wanted to do this myself but there's no way to route the cables if the controller is horizontal.
The only solution is to replace the controller with one designed for pedestal mounting, but they are really expensive - several hundred pounds when I looked into it.

I did re-engineer a twin Mercury remote for the same reason, all I had to do was make two plates that were copies of the originals but rotated by 90deg. That allowed the cable entries to be rotated on the inside or rather the whole unit to be remounted upright.
If you are brave and dismantle the remote you may find the same is possible (once you've retrieved the springs and screws etc from the ogin :) )
If you have detailed photos I can take a look to see if it looks similar.
Their might be exploded drawings available on t'web if you know the correct model number.
I have a Yamaha so I can't tell you myself.
Dave.
