I have a West Mersea trailer with a 1994 Pfaff winch. Finding it very difficult to turn the crank handle as the ratchet does not seem to be operating properly. I have to fiddle with the mechanism to get it to allow the crank handle to rotate. Assume this is not correct. Any advice would be appreciated.

The hint is in the manufacturers name
If the little spring that holds the ratchet pawl has rusted/fallen out, the pawl will drop in and engage all the time.
I threw mine away and got a better one, only about £25 from ebay. The strap on mine was very sun faded and therefore weakened, and the winch was very rusty.
I did have to dismantle the new one completely and rebuild it the other way round so the handle didn't clash with the ladder.

Hi Jim
I have made several adaptations some successful, some not so. With W Mersea trailers the winch position is too low and pulls the boat down onto the trailer. so I had an insert made to bolt to the top of the post where the ladder is (dont know if you have this configuration?) but the handle clashes with the boat and I had to reverse the winch so it hands on the other side. I now have two winches (not expensive as Michael says) one at the original location and one higher and it all works fairly well but a bit of a one to improve on.
