Re: boat heating

That is indeed interesting, looks like a high-tech version of your original suggestion! The use of an exhaust hose certainly addresses the issue of fumes. But as you say, expensive for what it is.

Re: boat heating

I have a solar powered extractor fan cut and fixed into the window above the heads on my 26M. My wife and daughter demanded a sweet smelling 'facility' and this was considered a better option than some foul perfumed toilet spray pervading the whole cabin. I don't know how effective it is at venting out the whole cabin though. Probably not very and I wouldn't trust it as my only form of ventilation.
As for keeping warm, making a brew on the meths fuelled Origo dual burner warms the cabin up quickly.
Combatting mildew and mould is a continuous battle. I am lucky in that Sowenna is only 10 15 minutes away from home and so I visit regularly and open the boat up, forward hatch as well, and let the air circulate (while I brew up and dream of Spring and plan another attempt at the Round the Island Race)

Re: boat heating

i saw a post where a man filled a meths cooker which had not fully cooled
There was still a small flame which he could not see
the meths set on fire as did the man
The man saved his life by jumping over the side
The boat was burnt to the water line

An inverted plant pot becomes a black body radiator and radiates to the sides
What is the difference between a plant pot and a pan inverted or otherwise

Re: boat heating

I met this man a few years ago and he did admit that his mistake was to fill the cooker while it was still hot. As the cooker instructions dictate it is important that the cooker is cool before refilling. With this exception I honestly believe that this is much safer than gas.

Simon,

I've been looking for an extract fan for the heads. Solar powered would be nice, does yours have the facility to close it water tight?

Dave.

I use one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLAR-VENT-STAINLESS-STEEL-AUTOMATIC-FAN-VENTILATOR-Model-SVT-224S-YACHT-boat-/161332097854?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item259024733e

the difference in air quality is amazing

I borrowed a hole cutter then fitted it using 4x stainless bolts + plenty of sealant .
Plenty of rain and waves and no leaks

Hi ian, I bought one that I havent fitted yet. I was planning to put it through the perspex over my heads on my M.
Where did you fit yours?

Re: boat heating

Not sure if these photos are very helpful but basically the extractor fan is fitted in the middle of the window above the heads and is merrily spinning away.
I don't think this is powerful enough to vent the whole cabin, it just sorts out the poopy smell but every little helps.
Just discovered water is getting in between the washboard and the sliding hatch inspite of my 'Blue Peter' strip of polythene.
Must have had some horizontal rain as it was okay last year.
